How to get Appendices to use A, B, C instead of numbers

This is the first document that I am compiling in Scrivener and I am having trouble having the appendices numbered by A, B, C. It keeps showing up as One, Two, Three (spelled out). I have tried overriding the layout for the title prefix by using APPENDIX <$t:A> . I have also tried “letter” instead of A but it keeps coming out as One, Two, Three? My Appendix layout is based on another layout in the built in Paperback 6X9 format. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong?
