Aw man, I happen to LOVE the short-lived icon for 3.5. Loved it so much I gave it pride of place, centered in the in the dock of every computer on which it’s installed. I managed to extract and reapply it from the package contents in order that I could still use it under 3.5.1, but it doesn’t appear to be full resolution. Is there a 1024x1024 version of this icon available anywhere?
Here is a short post on what I’ve found to be the highest quality method for copying icons between things using Finder. As a side note, I keep a folder with icons I wish to retain. It’s just a bunch of folders inside, with each folder having the icon pasted into it, using this method. That way, when software inevitably updates, you can exert your preferences again without having to dig up download links and all that.
You’ll know you’ve copied it right if you open Preview, and hit ⌘N with an icon on the clipboard. You should get a long sequence of crafted variants, as you don’t just want the 1024x. That would look quite blurry at smaller sizes, like in the Dock or in dialogue boxes.
As for 3.4, we pulled the main download link for it on the site because it has a few bugs we really don’t want floating around. So I would stress to anyone finding this thread that the following is provided so you can access the icon if you want it. I wouldn’t recommend actually using this version.
Scrivener 3.5.0 download link...
The biggest icon in that package (/Contents/Resources/Scrivener.icns) only goes up to 256 px, though. ![]()
You’re right, I didn’t pay attention to that part.
Still not sure if I understand why there are “two versions” of the icon. Is this related to the OS transition (15 → 26)?
ADD: To be more specific, that’s what I’m referring to:
details (please click me!)
Scrivener.app/Contents/Resources/Scrivener.icns
- 256 x 256
- 128 x 128
- 32 x 32
- 16 x 16
vs. Scrivener.app -> Info dialog
- 1024 x 1024
- 512 x 512 (144 dpi)
- 512 x 512 (72 dpi)
- 256 x 256 (144 dpi)
- 256 x 256 (72 dpi)
- 128 x 128
- 64 x 64
- 32 x 32 (144 dpi)
- 32 x 32 (72 dpi)
- 16 x 16
Yeah I don’t know all of the details well enough to say with total confidence, but it does seem like .icns is now deprecated and only present in Scrivener so that it has an icon at all on older systems.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who liked it! Unfortunately we had so many complaints about the updated icon that we ended up just creating a Liquid Glass version of the older icon, and replacing it with that. I case AmberV’s method doesn’t get the results you want, I have attached a 1024x1024 version of the 3.5 icon below, though, so that you can use that if you wish.
Yes, this is exactly it. On macOS 26, icons are dynamic, with light and shadow changing depending on… uh, stuff. But when you build an app using one of the new icons, Xcode generates a static .icns version of it so that older systems aren’t left without an icon.
Have to admit, I was one who liked the ‘old new’ icon.
I downloaded The Tahoe 26 for mac and played around with the appearance. I loved the Scrivener logo in the apps bar, nice and small and a lovely blue colour. Now after about a month the colour has gone back to the boring white logo. What happened? I didn’t change anything (that I’m aware of) How can I get it back to the nice blue colour? I now it’s a minor issue but I’m confused as to why it suddenly changed. Any ideas?
Oh, forgot to mention. The logo on my laptop is the nice one I like, can I copy it across to the iMac?
This isn’t a bug!
There was much discussion about this and the logo was changed back to something that was more generally liked.
You can, if you like, copy and use the 3.5 icon for 3.5.1, using the instructions above.
