How to setup alphanumeric appendices?

Windows 10, Scriv 3.1.6…

I have two section layouts for level 1 and levels 2+ numbering. I want the same for appendix legal numbering but with ‘A,B,C’ for relevant appendix, eg: A.1.3 for Appendix A with levels 2 and 3.

I make new section types Appendix L1 and Appendix L2+ in Project Settings, and new section layouts Apx L1 and Apx L2+ in Compile→Compile Formatter. When I assign Appendix L1 and Appendix L2+ layouts to Apx L1 and Apx L2 it changes default section layout to alphanumeric, that is the default section layout having it’s Title setting changed from <$hn> to <$Ahn>.

I’m a long term informed Scrivener writer but cannot adjust my old head to fix this. Please, what am I doing wrong, and how to correct?

Do you mean how, when applying a default subdocument section type, it cascades all the way down to the bottom level? So basically you’re going for this:

Draft
    [Main Matter]
    Appendices
        A First Appendix
            A.1 Subsection
            A.2 Subsection
                A.2.3 Subsection
        B Second Appendix

Now you can put a “Part” type on the master “Appendices” folder just fine (or maybe it is even structurally that way by default), and that probably works how you want it, and then you right-click and set the default subdocument section type to, let’s say, “Appendix”, which is meant for top level appendices. The problem then is that all of the subsections also get assigned to that, and you can’t find away to make them take on an “Appendix Subsection” section type, instead (without I suppose having to manually do all of that every time you make a new one)?

If that’s it, then how I solve this problem for myself is with document templates, and their ability to store section types, default subdoc section types, and default subdocument templates (whew!). I.e. You have an “Appendix” document template that is hard set to the desired Section Type, and its subdoc default is set to the desired subsection type. With that setup, you can then:

  1. Select the master “Appendices” folder, and use Documents ▸ Default Template for Subdocuments ▸ Appendix.
  2. And for simple setups like this, with two levels, that’s all you need. So long as the “Appendix” document template declares its default subdocument section type correctly, you don’t need any more complexity.

Say you want three levels though? Same idea, just with a little more wiring, and a little extrapolition from this original idea. You would then also want an “Appendix Subsection” document template that declares the third level subsubsection Section Type as its default subdocument type, then go back to the “Appendix” document template and make sure its “default template for subdocuments” points to the new subsection document.

Now you have a proper cascade; when you make a new item in the master Appendix folder, it creates an Appendix item from the template, and when you make a child item into that, it makes Appendix Subsection template items, which in turn declare the third level Section Type for anything you make into those. Repeat for as many levels as you need.

Oh, thanks! I’ll have a try.

Mind you, being classically pedantic when it comes to tech I like to know everything that’s happening behind the scenes. I’ll wade through a template.

BTW, haven’t visited for a while (Long Covid). Happy New Year from Scotland. I hope it’s a good one for all at L&L!

Here is a little simple example project of what I was going for in my head. It’s sometimes easier to see things in practice, I find:

Oof, I empathise with that; nasty disease.

Hope you weathered the weekend-ish storm all right, up there.
