At one of my other forums, a thread that seems to be getting some play sings to the tune of, “I need help naming one of my characters. He’s a were-elf, and it was his dad who is an elf who raised him so that’s where the name would have come from. He’s an important character, so his name has to be good. I have just introduced him to the other characters who attend a magicking school. HELP!”
The only response that comes to mind, which I have of course not written is, “Let me guess what your three favorite movie franchises are…”
Which brings up a question: would responding in that manner be trolling, or would it be conversation? I ask because I don’t always know where the line is when responding to (and reading the responses of) others.

Perhaps I should have prefaced by saying that the average age of the members at the forum in question is rather young.

A response like that would not be acceptable at the forum as the egos are still as fragile as the shell of a paper nautilus.
What a thread like that (and there are many) at my other forum does bring into focus is the effect that visual media seems to have on the writer these days. The young writer, that is.
There are many, many, many, many, (did I happen to mention many?) stories that are posted at that forum which are written in the first person, present tense. As you stroll through the stories, looking for something for which to give a review, you can see the mark left on an entire generation by POV video games.
