In Scrivener v3 for Windows, I cannot select British English as my language. The English option is American English. Any advice? Thanks, Ian
You can change the Spelling dictionary to English (United Kingdom), which should get the job done for you:
To adjust the Dictionary language
- Launch Scrivener
- Go to File → Options → Corrections → Spelling
- Click the “Download” button next to the Dictionary language box
- Select your language of choice and click “Download.”
- Click “Close” when the download has completed.
- Click “Select” and click on the language dictionary you would like to use.
- Click “Okay.”
I don’t see a dictionary language box on mac?
There isn’t one in Scrivener on the Mac because spelling is handled by the system. In Scrivener-Mac you can only change the interface language.
Languages are set in System Settings > General > Language & Region, so if you set English (UK) there, Check Spelling etc. will use UK spellings.
If you also want US spellings available, you’ll need to set one as Primary (which is what the computer will boot into) and the other as a “Preferred Language” that you can change to (“Globe” key, or Ctrl-Space—at least on my set-up). But that change is system-wide until you switch again.

P.S. This is on MacOS 14 and 15; previous versions have “Preferences” rather than “System Settings”
