TBH, all the new design is making me want to go back to Mac NGL.
That’s actually a comforting idea. Maybe 27 will be great. Once they figure out what went wrong.

I use the search function under the Help menu plenty 
You can disable for some apps the icons:
Open the Terminal (Apps → Utilities → Terminal)
type:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSMenuEnableActionImages -bool false
and hit enter.
logout and then log in again.
This disables the icons on many apps, but not all (and unfortunately not with Scrivener)
to reverse that, type
defaults delete NSGlobalDomain NSMenuEnableActionImages
These icons are a nightmare.
