Today, I experienced every writer’s worst nightmare, when my computer crashed. It made me realize that I’m not sure where Scrivener backs up to.
I know I’ve seen that it is possible to share a project between devices, but is that a feature that comes readily available when Scrivener is purchased or a perk that you need to buy in addition to the app?
Scrivener was given to me as a gift. So I’m not really sure what my options are here, but I don’t want to lose my work. and am very hesitant to place all my work into word because of AI use.
Unless you’ve changed the backup default options, your work should be safe. You might want to have a look at the manual, section 5.2 Backing Up Your Work, where you’ll also learn how to restore a project from a backup.
Good luck!
And this post by me. It was written for Scriv v1, but none of the backup features have changed except for menu options. You can skip the SYNCING section.
I’m not sure of the comment about Scrivener being given to you as a gift. If someone brought it for you legitimately and you have a valid licence there are no issues. If another scenario…
Contrary to another post, if you use the standard location your files are very much at risk from a computer crash if a hard drive/SSD failure is involved.
I recommend having your backup location on an external drive (NAS, USB, or a cloud service). Always make sure that compress as .zip is selected as that makes the project into a single file that is easier and safer to work with, especially if using a cloud service.
It was bought for me legitimately, the problem is that everything was in an email ive lost. I was worried that to share documents between IOS and Windows id need like the key, which i dont have anymore. And i was confused if i had to buy the IOS version to use it, if i already have the program.
Ive bit the bullet and just bought it this morning.
Ive been chewing at this problem all morning and afternoon and have found out how to sucessfully get my files onto my ipad just in case!
Yours has been the only reply tho that has really adressed what my problem has been! And im super grateful for the advice and will impliment. Thank you!
You can use your Windows license on multiple PCs, but iOS Scrivener is a separate product requiring a separate purchases.
