Came with a trial of Office 2010, which I didn’t feel I needed as I had a perfectly good copy of Office XP which suits my needs.
However, I am trying to import my Word documents into Scrivener. It’s enough of a nuisance that Scrivener can’t import any file which originated with my old Word 6 program, that I have to open each file with Word XP and save it as Word 97-2003. (I have hundreds of files.)
But every time I click on a Word document to import it, Office 2010 tries to install. 4 clicks of “No. No. No. NO, DAMMIT!” later, my file is imported to Scrivener.
It’s particularly annoying that when the Import fails, Scrivener creates a blank document with the name of the file I was trying to import which then has to be deleted.
Is there any way to keep Office from trying to install?
I finally told Windows to open any Word document in Word Pad when I clicked on the file. I was going to associate .doc files with Word XP, but when I try an association, I cannot find Word XP to do the association. Hence, the workaround with WordPad.
It sounds like the lack of a file association for .doc is causing the system to want to install Office 2010. Since the import works when these files are associated with WordPad, presumably it would also work if you could get them associated with Word XP. (Sorry if this is belaboring the obvious)
When I right-click a .doc file and select Open With…, the only program listed is Word under Recommended Programs; but there’s a Browse button that would allow me to locate and select any program and make the association. So the question is one of locating Word XP on your computer. Perhaps if you right-click its icon and select properties it will give you a file path that you could then use in the open-with association dialog.
My apologies for misreading your post. I’m out of suggestions then, other than the not-very-helpful one to keep rummaging around for the Word XP .EXE file.
