Importing a novel from word

Hello everyone. I am new to L&L and to Scrivener.

I am trying to figure out (but not succeeding) how to import a whole novel into Scrivener from docx and then divide it into chapters so that it will print out naturally.

I’ve tried importing it into the draft and also into chapter but I can’t understand how to create new chapters so the way it prints is to with “chapter #” written at the top of each chapter, but I have my own chapter headings - Chapter One etc. And because I have tried to chop it up into scenes I don’t get a break between each chapter. I’m so lost. But I have been listening to tutorials and been through most of the interactive tutorial and still I cant figure out how to do this.

I also made the mistake of allowing scrivener access to my personal contacts so it automatically puts my name and address on the top on the document which I don’t want. Cab I reverse this? I just want to compile my files so that I can self publish. Any suggestions would be very helpful or even pointing me to to a tutorial or article that explains exactly what I should be doing would be very helpful also.

Many thanks and blessings,

T

Part answer, re giving Scrivener access to your Contacts:

To get your chapters separated:

Start a new Scrivener project (using the BLANK template).
Copy and paste your entire novel into the ‘untitled’ document within the draft folder.
Put your cursor at the end of the first chapter.
Do: DOCUMENTS >> SPLIT >> AT SELECTION

Scrivener splits your document into 2.
The first contains just chapter 1.
The second contains everything else.

Now go into the second document and find the end of your second chapter.
Split the document at that point using DOCUMENTS >> SPLIT >> AT SELECTION

Keep splitting at the end of each chapter.
If your novel has 19 chapters, you should end up with a Draft folder containing 19 documents, each containing just one chapter.

Hope that helps, in part.
Shout if it doesn’t.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your help. Very kind of you to take the time.

I’d finesse DiamondDog’s suggestion a little. After you’ve split the Word document into separate Scrivener documents convert each one to a Folder (Documents > Convert > Convert to Folder). Then go to start of text in each folder/document and use Documents > Split > Split at Selection.

This will give you control over the Chapter titles during File > Compile. It also allows you to split each Word chapter into smaller documents for editing, revision, re-ordering and sundry other activities.

Thank you guys so much. I have been trying for 3 days to figure this out. Much appreciated

Have a fantastic day!!

Hi guys, One more question if you are still around. When I compile the chapters and print to pdf or otherwise, how do I get Scrivener to start each new chapter on a new page?

Many thanks for your time.

Go to the File > Compile Separator’s panel and select what is inserted. I think it is easier to get the desired results by using Folders to contain each chapter—hence my earlier suggestion—rather than trying to fiddle with individual documents on the Contents panel (where you can force a Page Break before for each one).

Thanks, reepicheep.
Your suggestions make a lot of sense.
Must admit, mastering the Compile function is very much a work in progress for me.
