As always, I seem to miss the obvious. How do I get my existing work into Scrivener?
File> import either files or a project or research. If word document you can split when import or later.
Note that you need to create a project first, in order for Scrivener to know where to put the imported item.
If you haven’t already, I’d recommend taking a look at our Interactive Tutorial, available from the Help menu. It’s a good overview of fundamental operations like this.
Edit: If you’re wondering how to make an existing project visible, for instance in the Recent Projects list, use the File → Open command to locate it on your computer. The Recent Projects list is not intended to be an “index” to all of your projects and is not reliable for that purpose.

You can also drag & drop Word docs directly into the Binder area of an open Scrivener project.
-
If your work was composed in some other software and resides within a file of a type Scrivener does not have a converter for, you may need to use whatever Export function that software offers to export your work into a file format Scrivener can read.

And lest we forget, there is always the humble Copy and Paste!
And if you want to import structured (i.e. with levels) docx or Markdown you should use Import & Split to transfer that structure into the Binder.
I feel stupid; so I now have two open files in the folder. One named my project and the other a scriv doc. Are you saying to drag my writing (now on my desktop) to the folder? Sorry. This is not my jam; I can barely work a coffee machine ![]()
Open the project and then go to menu File > Import and opens file explorer and choose file to import file into open scrivener project.
