Just got the prompt to download v2.9.9.7 as I am currently on v2.9.9.6. I selected “Download Update”.
Task Manager suggests my network adapter is currently being taxed at around 200kb/s max (but this includes all apps on my PC, not just Scrivener), which is insanely slow compared to my connection. I’ve been waiting to download this update for the last 20 minutes - just hit 30%.
If I try to download via Chrome direct from this forum, I get more like 5MB/s. It was completed in the time it took me to write the second half of the last paragraph and this line right now.
Should I not try to download the updates through Scrivener itself? No idea why it’s so slow - might end up taking an hour all-up, at this rate, vs ~30 seconds.
I can confirm the download link is running intermittently slow. I have a 500mb/s fibre connection and at it’s slowest the Scrivener update download pulled through at 27.4kb/s. I was able to get a faster response by manually downloading rather than rely on the update option in Scrivener but even so at it’s best it only downloaded at 23mb/s
There could be a lot of pressure on the Scrivener server or congestion somewhere along the routing but the problem is intermittent as I said but at best still not exceptionally fast.
Nothing changed in Chrome settings, and all other apps as far as I could see have been fine, including Chrome downloads and web browsing. The only thing to run slow was Scrivener’s in-app download. As soon as I switched to Chrome, it was very fast.
Maybe it is my PC, but it is awfully coincidental for the change in speed to occur right when I download directly vs the auto-update, and it ran for a good 20 minutes before I cancelled it, so it wasn’t a short-lived problem.
Two laptops, same network. #1 auto-updated normally. #2 went into a slow download speed for some reason. I cancelled, and went to Help / Check for updates and the speed of the download was comparable to laptop #1. Don’t know why it happened. Don’t care. Cancel and Help / Check for updates solved the slow download problem on laptop #2.
The slow download may be a function of the load on scrivener’s server since the RC7 was only announced today. I had 4 attermpts at the update and each download was different.
The first time, the download went very quickly but the update failed after a few dialogue boxes- with an error message that “trying to install file $(installdir) resolved to an empty value”.
I restarted RC6 and tried again but the second download only reached 1% after 5 minutes so I cancelled. The third download completed in a reasonable time but not as quickly as the first. The second attempt at installation also failed with the same message.
I didn’t understand the error at first because RC6 was installed in what was said to the default directory for 64 bit machines. It took some time for me to realise that the failures were probably due to my attempting the update from my non-admin user account on Windows. So I saved my preferences from within RC6, closed my non-admin account and relogged in as admin.
This time all went well but the download took about 10 minutes.
I went back to my non-admin user account and imported my preferences and all is well.
I generally manage to install and update programmes from the non-admin account - usually being asked to provide my admin password. But RC7 install didn’t give me that option. However, only having dived into the betas at RC6, I am reasonably impressed with how easily the update went. I had feared that I would need to remove RC6 first.

On my PC and my laptop the download went fine as usual.
On my daughter’s PC atthe samenetwork, it ook an eternity. Also,she started downloading at the same time as did I.
In the meantime we went for awalk and ate lunch. In fact the download is still going. Very very strange … And oh, her PC is exactly the same model as mine (we bought both together.)
So it can’t be due to our PCs or our network .And it can’tbe due to Scrivener itselt. Is there any explanation?
Not just the In-App Download. I tried to download the latest version from the link in the beta posting and got 17kb/sec - on a gigabit line (and according to a speed test, I actually get 950Mbps). Will try again later, but might be some network problem.
