Installing Scrivener 3.1.6.0 on Linux Mint 22.3 with Wine 11

I`ve installed Scrivener under Linux Mint just two days ago and thought I share a updated installation guide in 2026.

First of this guide should (theoretically) work under any Linux distribution, but as always your mileage can vary.

First step: Install Wine 11.0 from the official homepage.

Second step: Install Winetricks

Third step: Install Windows Net 4.8 (or the activation process for Scrivener does not work)

Fourth step: Under Winecfg set Windows 10 as the preferrer way to run windows programs

Fifth step: Download and install Scrivener 3 onto your system. The installer should run without a problem.

Sixth step: Navigate to your virtual C: drive on your system to your Scrivener folder and rename the Texttospeech folder to something else. Or else Scrivener will hang on startup.

Final step: Start Scrivener, choose a backup folder and enter your license. Wait a few moments for the activation process to finish and that`s it. Enjoy your Scrivener install!

Thanks.

You can also use the Lutris installation script to automate this process. There’s a thread on that.

Ive tried the lutris script, but its broken.

How so?

Linux Mint usually provides older packages, but it should be a relatively straightforward process.

Make sure that you have the latest version of Lutris installed, and check its default runner. I’d choose plain Wine (System) rather than ProtonGE or similar. And then try to install it with the script again.

Why should I do that? My Scriverner install is just running fine. Without Lutris.

Oh, and the installation script with Lutris did not install Net4.8. It actually exited with an error. That`s life.

For me :stuck_out_tongue: For the sake of troubleshooting.

The script instructions say that you’re going to be asked to install dotnet with three pop-ups, and you can select No every time. Have you tried that, along with the advice above?

Happy that it works for you. Again, it’s for curiosity’s sake.
