I’m experiencing the exact same issue. No difference at all. I tried every fix in this feed to no avail. If an effective solution exists now please help and post it. Thx
Is there any way of fixing this issue using only an iPad? I don’t have access to my MacBook right now and I need to get into my projects quite urgently.
So I guess I’m having an understanding problem. I’ve viewed the file on both the app and online in Dropbox and can see no option to ‘dig into the file’ and adjust things as you say.
I feel like I’m missing a critical step here. I’m sorry to be a dunce but can anyone clarify?
I ran into this same problem and fixed it without adjustments to the inside of the file by following the advice of the one reply about moving it out of the Apps/Scrivener folder. I just made a folder called “writing” on the upper level of my Dropbox space & tossed my project in there.
Next, I had to get Scrivener to see that folder, which was not easy. Doing Edit | Cog | Dropbox Settings, the app would not see the new folder at all, no matter what I tried. But when I did Edit | Cog | Re-Link Dropbox, it asked permission to allow again, I was able to see the writing folder, and everything was fine after that.
The other problem is, I can’t figure out how I saw the “Re-Link Dropbox” menu item, because all I see now is “Unlink Dropbox.” Beats the heck outta me.
Went back & tried again. Re-Link still not there, but you say you saw it, so I’m apparently not delusional, so I pushed buttons until I hit the circle-arrows Sync button. Scrivener synced, and suddenly Re-Link is there.
Could someone please finally write a coherent, comprehensive and exhaustive instruction in English language instructing which specific settings and standard procedures (Save, Backup, Sync etc.) a Scrivener user should use on his Mac in order to have his projects safely stored on both his Mac and on his Dropbox and to be able to access the saved / synced / backed-up and up-to-date projects on his iPhone and his iPad consistently and reliably?
I cannot understand why this has been made so difficult, complicated, unreliable, frustrating and annoying. I also do not understand why Scrivener users are forced to google and browse through these boards to find this sort of basic information and why the software and the user experience cannot be designed properly in this regard. This is not rocket science. Why can’t Scrivener simply ask the user during installation and/or setup how and on which platforms he wants to use Scrivener and, accordingly, suggest recommended settings that can be clicked conveniently in order to be able to use Scrivener on a Mac, as well as on an iPhone, and an iPad via a Dropbox account? Why? Will this ever change? Please contact some professional software designer and ask him to fix these things.
ETA: The L&L Knowledge Base article that @dirkhaun linked to above is useful for learning how to share/sync your Scrivener projects with other Macs or PCs. The article I linked to is specifically for syncing with iOS devices, which I believe is what you were asking about. If I am mistaken, please clarify what you’re looking for.
Because the necessary settings aren’t in Scrivener. Scrivener just sees files on the local hard disk. What happens after that is between you and the Dropbox software.
I was looking for three simple and clear one-sentence answers to the three very basic questions below that all relate to my goal of being able to save a project on my Mac hard drive and on my Dropbox account so that I am able to continue working on the safely saved and backed-up project on the go using my iPhone and my iPad:
Where and how should I save (and what should I not do when saving in order to avoid problems)?
Where and how should I back up (and what should I not do when backing up in order to avoid problems)?
Which sync settings should I choose and how should I choose them (and what should I not choose in order to avoid problems)?
I think these are all fair and understandable questions. I have neither the time nor the energy to study the massive rambling texts in the link you provided and to decipher what they mean in practical terms.
If my above-referenced basic goal of being able to access and work on a project on my iPhone and iPad is realistic to achieve (is it?), could the Scrivener development team just give an “executive summary” of the massive text document? Just list the necessary settings and the basic procedure in an an accessible form.
The one and only reason why I decided to purchase Scrivener iOS version was that I wanted to be able to conveniently access the projects I create on my Mac and continue to polish them on the go on my iPhone and iPad. If this is possible—and it is marketed as being possible—Scrivener development team or customer support team must be able to tell how it is done. We are talking about the most basic functionality of the product, aren’t we?
Step one is to download and run the Dropbox app on your Mac, and learn to understamd how the Dropbox app works and what Dropbox is and isn’t.
When that’s been done…
On your Mac, in Finder: Create a sub-folder in your Dropbox folder in Finder and call it Scrivener projects. Make sure that all projects you create are saved in that folder when you create them.
On your Mac, in Finder: Get yourself another cloud service (that works rougly like Dropbox), create a sub-folder in that cloud service folder and call it Scrivener backups. Change the backup settings in Scrivener → Prefrences → Backups to point to that folder.
In iOS Scrivener, tap Edit at the top, then gear wheel at the bottom and choose Dropbox settings. Navigate to the folder Scrivener projects, select it and the back out. When you’re back in the projects screen, tap the sync icon at the top right.
Done. If any of this is unclear you need to learn more about how to ise a Mac works and how to use an iOS device. If so I can recommend the Take control of… book series.
I would just emphasize that “synchronization” and “backup” are not the same thing. Endless confusion results when people convince themselves that they are.
You can save wherever you want. If you want projects to be accessible from your iOS device as well, you’ll probably want to use a dedicated sub-folder within the Dropbox folder on your Mac. (If you don’t have a Dropbox folder, go to their site and follow their installation instructions.)
You can backup wherever you want except the folder you chose in step 1. Use the Scrivener → Preferences → Backups pane to choose your backup location. Check the ZIP option to reduce the risk of confusing your backups with your live projects.
Because there are very seldom technological solutions to behavioral problems. There is always going to be trouble when users do not want to understand at least the basics of how their computers and software actually work.
Just to clarify one point made above: I am of course aware of the concepts of saving, syncing, backing up, cloud services etc. I must be because I represent companies that produce or procure solutions related to these functions. I also regularly use many other work-related programs (not only writing programs) that function on and sync seamlessly between different platforms (Win/Mac/iOS) without the sort of problems and trickery that appear to be addressed so frequently on these support pages. My questions were due to Scrivener’s approach to solving these issues in its product design and the lack of clear and concise instructions
involving these issues—issues which other companies tend to eliminate altogether by designing user interfaces that are informative and customer-oriented in this regard.
If you understand all this, why do you make statements and ask questions that suggest that you are a complete computer newbie? Why don’t you just read the existing instructions instead of pretending to be ignorant and waste the time of other users?
