The find/replace feature is crashing in my IOS app suddenly. I’ve synced to Dropbox several times. I don’t know what else to try. It is really slowing me down.
Nice add, @AmberV – and I hope @KB might find my message just above now that he’s back from such well-deserved recharging personal time, suspect it might contain some pretty useful hints, regarding at least where they were gleaned…
I finally got an external keyboard to use with my iPad Pro. Whether I use command-F or tap the magnifying glass button to search, the field for typing my search terms flashes at the bottom of the screen and then disappears. There’s no practical way to use it.
The only way I found to do searches is by turning off my external keyboard.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?
EDIT: Something similar happens in Numbers (Apple’s spreadsheet app) for iPad but without an external keyboard… every now and then (in fact quite frequently!) when I try to create a formula, the onscreen keyboard hides the formula editing field and I have to restart the app to correct it. I mention this because it suggests it may be partly an OS issue except that it doesn’t happen with Find.

No worries! It looks like the thread title needs a little help anyway, to make it clearer. It used to only be a problem with windowed mode, but Apple graciously expanded the problem to all modes a while back.
We’re aware of it and will probably change how the Find system works entirely, as it doesn’t seem the old ways of attaching functions around the keyboard or reliable any more—as you’ve noted in other tools.

iPadOS 26.3 fixed the crash bug with no software update with App Windowing turned off. Find, find and replace, repeated display and hiding of the find/replace pane works nominally. Instead of crashing in Windowing App modes, the pane only shows and hides itself. Still unusable, but not crashing. Maybe in the next release, that’ll fix itself, too. To me, this bug seemed due to a custom out-of-spec custom use of a UI element revealed/invalidated by an OS overhaul. I could not imagine the crash being due to fundamental flaw in the OS, but here we are. In all my years programming Windows, most all the bugs I attributed to Microsoft turned out to be mine. But then 26.x has been crap on all the platforms such that beta bugs I reported in Feedback are still not fixed, so I should not be surprised. I do let my iPad report crashes to Apple, so maybe I wasn’t the only one. As a dev, I would probably record the failure happening in Windowed Apps mode and post the video in repeated Radars to Apple before reworking the find/replace pane, but I wouldn’t complain if your devs fielded a simpler UI modeless dialog update.
In anycase, I can now use Scrivener again. You can decide if the problem is sufficiently resolved.

Every so often I’ll get errors like these, or other related application misbehavior that I cannot for the life of me figure out. Then it will turn out to be something silly like a stuck key, or I’ve set the extra keyboard aside and something got set on top of it, or I’m not paying attention to where other things are.
I’m fairly sure this is not your problem, but have a look anyway, especially since it seems to impact other applications.
While generally that is good advice, to check the hardware, as noted above in the thread, this is very much a 100% reproducible bug that everyone using a keyboard will see. Switch off the keyboard and it goes away.
