Hey Scrivener users, I was wondering if Dropbox is a good choice to backup your Scrivener 3 files.
If you backup as zip every online storage should do fine—including Dropbox. As to the 2 GB, that depends on how big your projects are and how many backups you want to keep.
If you’re also using Scrivener on iOS or iPadOS, you have to use Dropbox for syncing and it’s your choice if you want to use the same service for the live projects and the backups. All eggs in one basket, you know…
If so, you should take care to keep your life projects strictly apart from your backups to avoid confusion. And you should consider that the life projects will use some space of the 2 GB too.
Agree, if do zip backups which creates a single file then most cloud backups are fine, but make sure service is set to save files locally as well. Dropbox alone is recommended by L&L is sync live project online.
I use Google Drive because I get 100 gigs for 2 dollars a month. If you have a lot of backups (I set mine to 25) or a lot of projects 2 gigs may not be enough. Dropbox has a big jump in cost from free to lowest paid tier.
This is untrue. Dropbox is the only service that supports direct synchronization with iOS Scrivener, but synchronization between desktop platforms is just a matter of copying files from place to place.
Best practices for using Scrivener with cloud services can be found here:
Be sure to read the advisory for whichever platform you’re thinking of using. In particular, Google Drive is not trustworthy for live Scrivener projects.
I said putting live projects on cloud services is not advised except for Dropbox , while zip backups works on any cloud service. As per the article you referred to.
Except that is not what the article I linked says.
There are many cloud-sync services available but one (emphasis mine) that works well with Scrivener is Dropbox. A Scrivener project is made up of many linked and interdependent files, and each one needs to be synced correctly to avoid problems with the project. The guidelines below are written with Dropbox in mind but would also apply to other similar cloud-sync solutions (emphasis mine).
Except every other service has advisory about possible sync errors or we have horror stories on the forum. Whatever you say, I’m not trying to fight, I am glad to put zip backups on cloud services that sync and unzip on my other site. Dropbox beyond 2 gigs is too expensive. I will not say anything more.
Plenty of horror stories about Dropbox, too.
