Issue WIth Background Image

Hi all! Hope you are doing well today!

I have a small issue with customizing the background image while in composition mode. For the record I have Scrivener3 and according to ‘check for updates’ i am all up to date (as of 08/28/2025).

I have set an custom image of these mint leaves as the background image, however when I get the urge to change it i have NO idea what I’m doing or how I even did changed the image in the first place ;_;.

I go to File > Options > Appearance > Composition Mode > Colors > Change text and nada no change.

I go to Project Settings > Background Images and nothing I do there works either.

I did a search (superficial admittedly) but can’t find an answer. Please assist! Thank you!!

And if someone could explain how to change the corkboard background too that would be also very much appreciated :folded_hands:

Hi

If the changes seem to have no effect, restart Scrivener (?)
. . . . . . . . .

As for changing the text color, it’ll only work if your font is set to no color.

If your text has a color, black or whichever, then the color setting in the options will have no effect.

Hi Vincent!

Thank you SO MUCH for the help! I did the thing with the corkboard and that worked like a dream so thank you again!

However, I am doing exactly what you suggested for the composition mode but there is no change. I’ve exited out and restarted and I’ve tried changing the theme completely but still nada. I also tried hitting the default color button and even that won’t apply. Is it a bug? Or maybe a problem with the theme I’m using?

At the very bottom of composition mode, moving your mouse there should make a bar appear. All the way to the right, move this slider :

. . . . . . . . .

For this issue, I believe that yes, a theme could potentially cause this.

Antoni is a themes expert. (I personally know zit.)
Meanwhile, perhaps try and see what results you get with the default theme ?
(Make sure to save your theme/options changes first.)

Where is the background fade slider? On the actual editor or in the options? Sorry I switched it back to default and I’m still having trouble haha. I might be blind as I am moving my mouse and nothing is popping up.

I believe if go to project settings and choose Composition Mode and choose from disk, when choose image should see image name below.

To set the background, do as @GoalieDad said.
It would seem that I pointed to the wrong location.

Ohhhh okay thank you both so much. I tried the Project Settings way and that background fade slider is not showing up on my thing at all. I think my scrivener might be bugged/glitched. Is there a way to manually get this fixed or should I reinstall. Pretty scared to do that haha.

Yes, a Theme could set the Composition Mode background.

But isn’t the setting in the Project > Project Settings > Backgrounds menu?

Agree with Antoni, try using the default light theme and see if can see the fade. this is from a custom light theme with partial fading

I got the fade!! Yes indeed I switched over to composition mode and saw the slider :)! And the background image was there too in composition mode! Never give up too early I guess haha!

So now about making it work in the regular mode…

Even in a Theme, I don’t expect the Editor Pane and the Application window to provide a transparency option.

But you can set the Background pattern behind a fixed width Editor in the Appearance > Main Editor settings.
