When I compile, italics render as underlined text (a head-scratching default, but steeped in history, no doubt). The help forum advice said to duplicate the ‘Manuscript (Times)’ format then for this copy’s Format Designer, uncheck “Convert italics to underlines”.

Is there a more idiomatic way to express my character’s important inner monolog, e.g. should I set a specific ‘style’ that I can tell both editor and compiler to render in italic body font?
That would be a workaround, but this bug ought to be looked at as well.
The font in your screenshot appears to be Courier, not Times. I know that when I use Courier, it defaults to underlining text marked as Italics. I imagine that is because Courier does not have true Italics, which is why in Word we have to use oblique styles to mimic Italics. I’m guessing that in Scrivener there is no “oblique” workaround, and thus it’s forcing underlining in place of true Italics simply because there is no Italics font in Courier–even though you’ve explicitly set it to not underline Italics text.
I suspect that somehow the custom project format you’ve chosen, Manuscript (Times), is not using Times because if it were, you would probably have Italics displaying. Have you somehow modified the Manuscript (Times) project format to use Courier rather than Times?
If it were me, I might again duplicate the Manuscript (Times) project format, ensuring that I do not deliberately or inadvertently change the font from Times to anything else.
Not sure whether the UI was written with too low-level abstractions in mind, or they’re plumbed for certain ‘Compile For’ targets (e.g. Print), or am misunderstanding what Body Text is supposed to mean, or …
