Are there any plans to make the keywords feature easier to use?
I would love to see the following:
Being able to use the hierarchy within files, so if you use Keywords for more than one purpose, they can be sorted under parent headings.
Auto complete so when you start typing a keyword you get a list to choose from, rather than having to remember exactly what you called it or physically find and drag it from the list.
Easier moving/resorting of keywords. Drag and drop is very fiddly for manually sorting. I would love to be able to just CTRL+arrow up/down as needed like with the binder.
I’ve moved this to the Windows subsection on account of most of it being related to incomplete implementation rather than stuff we just haven’t thought of.
Auto-complete: missing feature.
Access to common sorting and movement commands: missing features.
There are other things you haven’t listed too, some as simple as just remembering what was expanded/collapsed, how where you left the window last time, and how large it was.
Now as to matter of using hierarchy outside of the floating window, yes, I do feel we can do better there. Your idea is not a bad one in my opinion, a rather simple way to make that information more useful: to display that hierarchy in some fashion without too much complexity around it.
We haven’t gone down that path yet though, because once you start thinking about them as hierarchical—rather than simply just visually organised that way to keep your list clean in that one window—then it becomes more natural ask why they don’t function in a hierarchical fashion either? Why shouldn’t searching for “X” also produce items using “Y” and “Z” if those are grouped beneath it? And if we don’t want that behaviour, how do we turn it off? It gets more complicated, and potentially means more UI to deal with and learn.
Maybe not! Maybe there are some good answers to these problems we could adopt, but like I say, it requires some careful thinking before going down that path.
Right now it’s pretty simple. It is to let you to make your Project Keywords list cleaner.
