The manual mentions that it is possible to link the editors, so that clicking on a document in the outliner in one editor will load that document in the other editor.
But I can’t find any info about how to actually do that… Can anyone advise?

If the footer is visible under your outline, there should be a button with two arrows pointed in opposite directions. Click it so they turn blue.
This works for the Corkboard mode as well. 
Superduper, thanks! Looking forward to trying this out. I was feeling jealous of the Mac version’s ability to hoist the binder until i realised the same effect could be achieved by opening a folder as outline in a split editor. This will make it work full proper
