LLMs are not software support

Dear users:

If Scrivener isn’t working properly, please don’t ask ChatGPT or any other LLM.

We have a comprehensive manual, available from the Help Menu. We have this forum, with many helpful users. And we have a paid staff of actual human experts.

The stochastic parrot has none of those things. But I recently helped someone who asked it first, and wasted a significant amount of time trying things that had nothing to do with the actual problem. Which I was able to resolve with two questions in about five minutes.

Fortunately, the things they tried were only useless, not actually destructive. This time.

But, but, ChatGPT knows everything

I’m sick of helping out people who asked AI. Permanently lost data this last time.

Chuck Wendig shared his experience on this matter a short time ago. (tw: swears, cats, bad sums, spiders)

The psychology behind this belief people have in LLMs reminds me of ELIZA, which was neatly captured in a snippet in Adam Curtis’s Hypernormalisation
