Hello - when I opened Scrivener today, I realized I lost a chapter. I typed the majority of the chapter last thursday. I reviewed the chapter on Friday Scrivener was saved on Friday afternoon. Could a chapter be saveed somewhere else? I am new to scrivener .
It has re-appeared. Yes, you are all going to think I am FoS. But, I could not see this chapter for over an hour this afternoon. Now I can! the content also did not show up when I compiled a preview! thoughts?
Are you using File->Save As to create “backup” copies? It could be the missing chapter is in the backup copy.
Is it possible you wrote “on” or “in” a folder, rather than a document in a folder? A lot of compile settings assume that you don’t want to include the text of folders.
Or are you saving in some weird cloud service?
Are you saving to a folder that automatically backs up to a cloud like google drive? I think that can interfere with the file system in scrivener. I suspected that happened to me when I couldn’t find some stuff I was sure I had written. Now I do my work in an offline folder but I put my backup folder in a google drive folder so whenever I back up the project, it gets duplicated in the cloud. Also I “save as” and put the last version into the live cloud backup folder.
Thank you for your responses. It probably DOES have something to do with how I am saving. Not so sure if I completely understand the mechanics of this, but I will look into it. I am also still on a 30 day trial. Maybe time to bite the bullet.
Please be careful with “Save As.” It creates a new copy of the project and continues working in the new project. Which means that, in this case, you have now moved your “live” project from the local disk to the cloud. Since Google Drive in particular has known issues with the Scrivener project format, that’s a problem.
“Save As” is often a frequent contributor to “lost work” issues: if you continue working in the new copy, then open the old copy, the work you did will be “missing.”
