Say what you expect to happen.
When I have a snapshot that differs from the document currently showing in the editor (and selected in the binder), I expect that clicking the “Compare” button will show me the changes (insertions / deletions) in the Snapshots preview pane at the bottom of the Inspector.
Say what actually happens.
What actually happens, however, is that the Snapshots preview pane at the bottom of the inspector shows NOTHING when I click the “Compare” button.
Likewise, clicking the “View Changes on Copyholder” context menu item for the snapshot renders a BLANK pane in the editor next to the document in question.
Describe EXACTLY how to reproduce the bug in clear language, preferably by providing numbered steps.
Select a document in the Binder for which snapshots exist that differ from the latest version of the edited document.
Open the Snapshots pane in the Inspector.
Select any snapshot that differs from the latest edited version of the document now appearing in the editor.
Click the “Compare” button, or, alternatively, select the “View Changes on Copyholder” context menu item for the desired snapshot.
Witness the empty snapshot preview pane / lack of any text or changes being shown.
I know there is plenty of discussion out there on many blogs, concerning the Track Changes feature (not appearing as such in Scrivener), however I am unable to track changes between two snapshots: the text I added is highlighted in red, ok, but the text I removed doesn’t show, even as strikethrough. But maybe there’s some detail that I am missing.
It sounds like you have adjusted your preferences a little bit, as the default colour for added text is blue. I would go into the Appearance: Snapshots: Colors preferences, and make sure that the Deleted Text setting isn’t set to something weird, like the same as the background colour.
But I am not sure I’m doing the right things when I compare the two versions. I select both but then I am at a loss as to where I should look for the version showing my changes.
Same thing has happened to me— I’ve been using the latest for a bit and it just stopped working today.
What I was going to post:
I’ve noticed that my snapshots have stopped working. I can click the camera icon to take it (I hear it) and then see the text displayed. However, when I click the compare button, it just goes blank. I can rollback and it will revert, so the functionality is there, but I just cannot see the compare tab to see the text added/deleted.
This is happing for both old and new documents
any suggestions?
I’ve tired restarting program/computer thus far as well as creating new docs and opening old ones that had snapshots that worked, and now getting same issue as above.
Running: macos 13.0.1 (latest) and Scrienver 3.2.3 (latest)
Any updates, even if it’s just to confirmed it’s an apple bug and not something the dev can fix? Curious because this is a feature I use heavily.
Yes, we have discovered the nature of the problem just yesterday. Apple stopped including a particular tool in macOS 13 that has been around for ages and is a bit of a standard around the world. The replacement they have provided is not compatible with the previous, and seems to lack many features—some of which we need to compare RTF data in a useful way. So when Scrivener tries to call upon the tool it fails and results in no useful content (the empty view you see).
There may be a solution, but we’ll have to do some further research and testing to see if the standard tool we need can be packaged with the software.
Otherwise, to confirm, it’s only a display issue with the comparison feature. Snapshots themselves as a feature are totally fine from what I’ve heard.
ah, okay - thanks for the update. I do hope there will be a solution as it’s a big feature for the program (for me anyhow) and to see it not exist anymore wouldn’t be good.
And yes, the snapshots work on test where I rolled back limited edits to verify, but overall the function cannot be used now since you cannot see what you’re rolling back if doing real editing on a document.
