Hi, I was working on a draft of a story that disappeared from my project when I closed and re-opened Scrivener. Thank goodness I was able to find it in my backup folder. How do I make that rescued-from-the-backup-folder version of my project the one I’m working from, rather than the incomplete one that appeared when I opened Scrivener today? (hope that isn’t confusing)
Related question, how do I prevent that from happening in the future?
§5.2.3, Restoring from Backups, in the user manual PDF, should walk you through the process. It covers both full project restoration, or partial (if you’ve worked since this piece went missing, for instance, and just want to restore the missing piece).
It might seem that way because we have to be very thorough and cover every contingency when explaining things for everyone, in the safest way possible. We have to explain things to people who might not even know how to use a computer at all, and struggle with the concept of files and folders.
But when you boil it down to what is happening, it’s one of the simplest things you can do: we are talking about taking an old file you have somewhere else, and replacing a newer one with it. It is unzipping and dragging things around in Finder or File Explorer. That’s it!
And for restoring just a bit a project, it is again in essence no more complicated than opening two files at once, and dragging and dropping stuff between them, or copying and pasting text.
Right, that makes sense. Maybe it’s the level of detail that’s throwing me, but I can see how valuable it is to break it down so thoroughly. Thank you!
