Margin notes revisited

Hi,

This subject might not really belong on the wish list any more, since I’ve got the impression from hints strewn here and there that Keith is contemplating some variant on margin notes in version 2.

Anyway, since I’ve grown to really like Nisus Writer Pro as the replacement for Word, I thought I’d give an example of how nicely they have implemented their margin notes, called Comments.

First, Comments belong in a gutter all to themselves and said gutter is easily invoked or hidden by one click.

Comments are dead easy to create and you can add several note pages in the same Comment, should you wish. Deleting is just as easy, just cklick the minus button in the Comment footer.

I find this system extremely useful and comfortable to work with, to the extent that if Scrivener 2 doesn’t offer something similar, I will probably use Nisus for final editing and revisions.

Horses for courses, to be sure, but when I came across Margin notes in Jer’s Novel Writer (now apparently orphaned and unsupported), it was a revelation and an inspiration. No longer did I have to stop and ponder a word or an expression or go somewhere else if I suddenly hit on an unrelated idea – just throw out a margin note, scribble a few words, knowing that the note would stay in its relevant spot, and go on.

Pure bliss.

FWIW, YMMV and all the usual caveats.

Best,

Joachim

Thanks for your input. Yes, this comes up a lot and has been discussed almost to death. And I am well aware of how comments work in Nisus, Pages and Jer’s so there’s really no need for a screenshot. Scrivener 2.0 has lots of lovely shiny new features of which I am very proud, but if in the event you prefer editing in Nisus I say go for it, as it’s a wonderful app and my own favourite Mac word processor.
Enjoy your weekend,
Keith

Thanks for your output, Keith!

I’m looking forward to Scrivener 2.0 with great expectations.

A great weekend to you, too!

Best,

Joachim

I do think you will like the new comments system in 2.0.
All the best,
Keith
