Menu appears when I press my “Enter” key

I was writing something, when I pressed my “Enter” key to get to a new line, my cursor didn’t move, and showed a drop-down menu just like this:

now I have to us Ctrl+Enter to get to a new line, and this problem just can be met in one of my project, when I open a new project, the problem just vanished. but in the old project, my Enter key always cant function properly.

can’t you tell me how to solve this problem?

thanks!

It sounds like you’re probably in Script mode. You can turn it off at Format → Scriptwriting → Script Mode.

Katherine

problem solved!

thanks a zillions!

have a nice day!

I just encountered the same vexing problem. Don’t know how I activated Script mode; probably accidentally hit the right key combo. Problem fixed. Thank you!

Beyond doubt I have done something stupid but… all of a sudden whenever I have the cursor on a line with no text and press return I get a contextual menu (Scene heading, Action, Character…) but no line return. If there is text on the line it’s OK.
Can’t find anything in settings.
Scrivener 3.5.1 and Mac 26.0.1 (M1).

It sounds like you’ve accidentally turned script mode on (where the Return and Tab keys are set to do certain things when you press them, depending on whether you’re in a Dialogue, or Character, or either specific script element.) The toggle for script mode is cmd-8, so it’s easy to hit by accident…

If that’s the problem, then pressing cmd-8 will revert to standard editing mode and everything should be back to normal.

Try it, and see if that solves the issue.

HTH.

Yes! Thank you. Thought I must have bumped something, my keyboard skills are very sloppy.
