Scrivener has populated my computer with multiple versions of the same file. same name. though they are from different times, with differing revisions. thought I was losing my find, opening scrivener and finding whole scenes missing. why does this happen? how do I stop this or code scrivener to add some name/date to distinguish different docs?
Hi.
Go to settings.
In the Backup tab :
- Set your backups to happen when you actually want it to. (Automatic backups or manual backups only.)
- Have them zipped and timestamped. (Especially zipped. This makes the project vs backup question confusion-proof.)
- Set a specific folder for your backups, – somewhere conveniently navigable, and apart from where your project(s) reside in your HD folder tree. (A dedicated Scrivener Backups folder.)

“Scrivener” is not doing this to irritate you. This is happening because some combination of commands is being issued.
In addition to @Vincent_Vincent’s suggestions about Scrivener’s automatic backups, are you using the Save As command to create multiple copies of the project? That’s a very common cause of exactly this behavior.
