Multiple windows - I use Scrivener on a 27" iMac and with that big screen, much of the screen real estate is simply wasted with the current one-window setup. I want to be able to have a few windows open showing individual character notes, place notes, or maybe even a corkboard, while I work on prose for a given chapter in another window.
(I work on a 27" screen too.)
OK, glad to see it was mostly a matter of my having overlooked something.
However, may I suggest that this is perhaps a bit less intuitive than one might like? On my system, when I clicked that icon, it appeared initially as though nothing had happened. This was because the new quick reference window appeared UNDERNEATH the main editing window. It wasn’t until I went exploring in the WINDOW menu that I realized what had happened.
Otherwise, it seems like this would get much, if not all, of the job done.
Hmm, those windows should appear on top of the main window. Were you in full screen mode? If so, you can use Window > Float QuickReference Windows to ensure they always stay on top. (This should all be covered in the tutorial.)
Or if you have Float Window set on for the regular project window and not for the QR windows, they’ll open behind the main window–if both are set to float the QR windows should open on top, or if you turn off the float for the main project window.
I did not have full screen mode turned on, and the Float Window options were set to whatever the default is… I’d not changed it.
I have tried several times now to get multiple windows open, and it just never seems to work quite right. Sometimes I get one, sometimes not. I don’t usually have problems figuring out any program, so I can’t help thinking that the problem is not me.
This whole “Quick Reference” window thing seems unnecessarily complicated. Maybe I’d feel differently if it seemed to be working right, but I can only go by the results I’ve been getting.
Seriously, i just want multiple windows. Does it really have to be any more complicated than right-clicking on an item in my binder and selecting “Open in new window” ? And then getting a second window like the first one, but open to the indicated item? That’s all I want.
I don’t really see how QuickRef windows are complicated, and I’m afraid that in that regard, it does seem to be just you. Just select a document in the binder, outliner or corkboard and hit the space bar, or click on “QuickRef” in the toolbar, and that document opens in another window.
It is not possible to recreate the whole Scrivener project window, though, and never will be. It would be confusing to have the same project open in multiple windows like that, and co-ordinating them, and all the binder changes, would be technically unfeasible. Besides QuickReference windows is designed for exactly this purpose - for having documents open in different windows.
One thing you may find useful is Window > Float QuickReference Panels. This ensures that any QuickRef windows stay open above the main project window.
Is this multiple windows feature available on the Windows version too? Could not find it. Would be useful on my dual screen setup.
Not yet, I’m afraid - it was a 2.0 feature but will be coming to Windows, although I can’t say when.
All the best,
Keith
No problem. I can wait. Scrivener is a great software anyway.
Thanks!
