I’m actually going to cry. Every time I open the project it comes up with a blank loading screen, and then shortly crashes after.
I’m on IOS and I have no clue why does happens. I’ve tried everything, I created copies, moved it to my files app, cleared cache, unconnected and reconnected my Dropbox but nothing is working. All of my other projects seem to be fine. I’m so frustrated because I spent so long working on that.. is there any other way to fix it? I think my file got corrupted somehow but I have no clue, there was only around 35k words and I have a lot more storage left on my phone. Is there any other way to fix it or is it just gone forever?
I’m so devastated. All my hard work, gone in a matter of of minutes.. I’m so so so sad.
The good news is that it is very unlikely anything is lost. There is probably just something in the project that is broken, perhaps something imported recently, that isn’t allowing it to open. It could otherwise be a bug we are aware of that causes crashing when loading, closing or navigating within a project. We are still working on pinning down what causes it.
The less-good news is that is extremely difficult to do any kind of troubleshooting or repair with nothing but a mobile. Do you have a Mac or PC you can use? If not, we’re happy to help if you don’t mind sending us a copy of the project.
Edit: I think I’ve fixed it kind of? I emailed the zipped/compressed file to myself on my laptop, then opened it on Scrivener windows. I’m not sure how to get it back on mobile though
Okay great. First of all, please have a look at §15.2.3, Managing Projects Directly, in the user manual PDF, for various methods you can use to copy projects on and off your device without using Dropbox.
I’m glad to hear it opens fine on Windows. Whatever is causing the crash on iOS may still well be in the project though, given how very different the two versions are. For example, if you imported a web page recently on the phone, it might have a bad advertisement in it that is crashing the web page viewer—but this archived page isn’t even compatible with the Windows version and would just come up as a generic icon if you viewed it. There are many things like that, that might be different, from images to PDFs to even formatting in the text itself.
So absolutely do try copying it back and opening it (using one of the methods documented above), there is no harm in that, but if does crash again, there are some things we can attempt to do on Windows to reset or fix it.
