New Lit&Lat writing app

I don’t think it’s possible to be more transparent than Keith already has been.

I know we’re not supposed to say much while in beta, but I see two distinct markets. I certainly do not see any reason why Scrivener would be shoved aside (diminished, allowed to stagnate, lose focus…) for the ‘new lit&lat writing app’

As I said, no need for panic, or even ‘calm panic’.

As @xiamenese said, the original post points to opportunities to feed back into further Scrivener development.

In the long run, we are all dead.

I don’t speak for Keith, but I suspect he would be the first to admit that he doesn’t know what the future might bring. At this time, he doesn’t see an end to Scrivener. OTOH, 20 years ago he probably didn’t see himself as a full time developer, either.

@kewms I think yours is the most accurate reply.

Exactly. I was just raising one possibility that I have experienced with other software developers. We will have to wait and see.

That’s never been proven. 7% of all humans to have ever lived have never died. :face_with_monocle::crazy_face:

But, yeah. At some point he might just, y’know, retire. As we all know, @KB has the experience and wisdom of a 70 year old, the calm mental agility and efficient decision making of a 45 year old, all safely housed in the athletic body of a 20 year old… so even with the inevitable raising of the average retirement age to approximately 107 by the time our generation gets to retire, that still only gives us another 60 years or so before Scrivener is abandoned. By that point I’ll probably STILL only be about a third of the way through writing my debut novel, so, yeah add me to the worried list.

But still ZERO to suggest that could even remotely be the case.

Well, if you read the previous posts, it’s definitely non-zero. It’s not enough to ensure any outcome, but if it were zero, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

I said zero to suggest it, which is correct. There is nothing in what Keith or anyone else has said to suggest it will happen.

There is your (unfounded?) concern, but that does not suggest it will happen.

This is not meant to dismiss your concerns or to imply I think L&L would abandon Scrivener or any iteration there of. I’ve been a long time user and they’ve always shown themselves to be consummately dedicated to their product but what you’re describing is technically the nature of supply and demand. I would fully expect a company, especially a small software development one, to put more resources into the product of higher demand that, in all reality, probably allowed them to have more resources to spend in the first place.

I’m a long-term user of Scrivener, working on very large amounts of text, and I sympathise with Keith’s approach. I still write my texts without using styles and I believe in separating the content from the format, which is why I am an advocate of the compiler.
The new app suits me because it opens up the possibility of synchronising via the iCloud. The minimalist approach supports working on the iPad or iPhone, which I welcome. The new text system sounds very promising, and I’m curious to see what the replacement for the compiler will look like. I will certainly be using the new Writing App, possibly in parallel with Scrivener at first, and hope that it will be possible to import my very extensive manuscripts into the new app. I’m very excited about the new app.

OK, you sold me when you said the new app can export to Scrivener.

Will the app have targeted word counts?

Word count targets are included, yes - thanks for your interest!

You’re welcome! I’m really interested in the new app since it would be a cross-platform alternative to PanWriter. The new app will be perfect if it works with Pandoc as well (on desktop).

I can imagine a simpler “compile” interface as a result of the Pandoc integration. These days I use Scrivener and a TON of other apps to achieve the perfect final document.

Is there an update available on the new app? I’m not looking for a date, but more along the line of “it’s taking longer than I/we thought”, or “it’s going smoothly but don’t expect it to drop any time soon” kind of thing - in general terms, of course. “Go away and stop bothering us” is also an acceptable response.

Thanks.

Edited to add that I can’t believe I’ve been using the Win version since 2011. How time flies. Thanks for the great writing program.

I would say, somewhere in between the first two (smoothly going as expected is in part the knowledge that everything takes longer than expected), but definitely not the third.

Super intrigured about this app. Scrivener is the best at what it does, but I only use the core stuff for my novel project, so I’m curious if I still fall within the use case.

  • Chapter folders with chapter/document status (WIP, first draft etc)
  • Documents / chunks to split up a chapter
  • PDF/eBook compilation (chapter folder = chapter name)
  • Basic text formatting (bold/italics etc)
  • Research/scratch folders and documents
  • iPad mostly + macOS for exporting
  • Cloud sync of some sort (Dropbox for now)

I like this as a name for the app!

Any news about when to release? Before October?

L&L will never say … prudently so.

I’m really curious to see more UI screenshots. The one in the initial announcement looks minimalist, just the way I like it. I hope there will be a free trial (although I won’t be able to purchase it anyway, duh).

Hi.
The announcement says before the end of the year, so sometime within the next four months.
It would be cool if the new app were released together with the new macOS/iOS next month, but I can wait and I’m excited.
There’s a lot to tell, so let’s write it down!
Thomas
