New Updates

Why no new updates since june 2023?
Any plan for new updates?
Or a new major version is coming soon?

Which version?

The Mac version was updated Oct 2023, and if you read the forum you’ll have seen there is an update due shortly to address changes with Sequoia and Apple Intelligence.

Win version, the last update was July 2023 I believe.

L&L typically don’t discuss future releases, though there has been vague mention of a V4 at some point in the future.

I’m guessing if there are no pressing bugs and no new features to add, why put out an update just for the sake of it?

My Mac and Win versions are solid (apart from the Apple Intelligence Writing Tools menu issue that is known and will be addressed) and do the job exactly as advertised.

I’m pleased L&L aren’t endlessly tweaking and adding bloat while looking for an excuse to charge more as some (many?) software developers do.

Thanks for clarifying.

As a software developer, I get worried when I see software that hasn’t been updated for more than a year. But I believe what you said. If there are no bugs to fix and no features to add, there’s no need for updates.

I don’t have Scrivener yet, I tested the trial version and really loved it. My concern is more in the sense of whether I should buy it now or wait for a version 4 that they might already be developing.
I know that if they release a new version tomorrow, I’ll get a discount.

Apparently, I see there is no need for a V4 any time soon.

Given the long periods that have occurred between major updates (v1 to v2 to v3) if you like what you see then get it now. That said my own use of Scrivener is still very much at the v2 level and few v3 features get used. If it turns out that v4 is released very soon then past behaviour suggests that recent pruchases could be upgraded at no/low cost.

For me, as someone who led software development project, those long waits between major version is a sign that KB (as the macOS/iOS/iPadOS developer) is not a slave to borish fashion changes in user interfaces but is looking at functionality; a much more important aspect of product development.

You will get a discount when you buy before the grace period of the new version (usually a few months before the release). If L&L released a new version tomorrow, you would get it for free, I’m sure.

Besides from that Keith Blount, the developer, is known for super stable public betas but also for having them tested extensively to iron out even the tiniest bumps. And to my knowledge there hasn’t been a version 4 beta at all.

In short: Amazing software! Great price! If you need and like it, buy!

Already bought.
Thank you guys!

Buy now.

There won’t be a V4 in the near future (pretty certain of that) and as others have said if Keith released it soon, breaking with previous policy of thorough beta testing before release, there’d be a free upgrade for people who purchased during a reasonably period and a good upgrade price for those outside the free period.

If you read the L&L blog there is another app in development for release sometime next year, so I’m picking that will need to be put to bed before Keith focusses on any V4. DON’T wait for the other app (that is in beta) because it’s likely some (many?) months away. We aren’t allowed to discuss that app in open forum, but there is a post or two by Keith.

So, pull out the credit card and pay the very reasonable price for V3 on your platform of choice.

Yes - I must admit one of the best value software out there. Less than a $100; permanent licence; full professional program and great community support. No brainer.
Thanks to the crew who put it together and those who support it. Writing softeware for writers. Well done.
