I’m a long time user of Scrivener, probably going on at least 15 years at this point, and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the phone app that has been made available. I have been using that liberally as well.
The issue I’d like to raise today is the lack of non-cloud dependant syncing options.
I really, really, really, hate how dependant mega corporations are trying to make us, on the “benevolence” of them “allowing” us to give them full control over our data.
I just spent the last 5 hours trying to find a work around where I can sync via usb or airdrop/bluetooth with my new computer.
I was able to just straight up download the files onto my Mac, but after that it became impossible to get the files to sync or even recognise each other.
Having been searching for an answer through your forums, I can see that this is not a function that you have yet. I know that I am probably not the first person to raise this as an issue with you, and I just wanted to add my voice to the conversation.
For now, I’ll just stick to manually updating the files.
Hello.
Could you perhaps use one of those two-ended usb thumbdrives that also fit a phone?
I have mutliple computers (no iphone) and rather than syncing, I have that tiny usb key that I carry around with all my projects on it. It works fine (usb 3.0). (I backup plenty whenever I am working on a project, to make up for the increased risk of losing the projects/key. – Although I have to say that I’m not sure I’d feel any safer using a cloud service.)
Short answer: iOS Scriv has an export function. For two way transfer the exchange lists using iTunes, but in the current day, that would be handled by opening a Finder window onto your hitched up phone and looking under Files.
Of course, this is not a “sync” option – which you still seem to want. Rather, it is strictly Scriv project file transfer. So, you would be engaging in the dangerous practice of moving the project file back and forth and overwriting what was previously there.
Have you looked into no-cloud peer-to-peer (P2P) syncing using Resilio Sync or SyncThing ? Both free, I think, and sync on MacOS using encryption and without using a cloud server at all.
I don’t know if this is viable for Mac users without a headache these days (it used to be simple but I haven’t used it for many years). On Linux anyway, what I use is a tool called iFuse that lets you mount your iOS device straight to the computer like an external disk. Why sync or copy things around when you can edit the exact same project on both systems?
Thank you everyone for the thoughtful replies. I was intending to save a backup onto my usb, then mainly use my computer. Updating my phone as needed, and Airdropping a “Miscellaneous File” between the two if I needed to quickly copy something over.
Syncing via Finder and a direct usb connection was the thing that I tried to get to work for the longest yesterday.
I hadn’t heard of Resilio Sync and SyncThing. Will definitely check them out for sure.
I don’t have a Linux, but I’ve noted iFuse, and will look that up as well
I use the free version of Dropbox to sync between my Mac and my Windows PC, and never had a problem. It’s the only thing I use DropBox for, and it’s been great for me. Dropbox even has local sync using your local network (without cloud, it’s a setting). Not sure if that works with phones though.
LAN sync speeds up file transfers within the same network, it’s not a replacement for Dropbox’s infrastructure. The synced files will still end up in the cloud (just a little bit later), and the clients won’t even talk to each other without a connection to Dropbox.
