Non-breaking hyphenated words

Is there any way to insert a nonbreaking hyphen into a compound word in Windows?

I think he meant a non-breaking hyphen.
Go to Edit > Character Map or Edit > Emoji & Symbols to open the special character table and search for it:

NON-BREAKING HYPHEN
Unicode: U+2011

Yes, that’s what I meant. Thank you for your help. It seems like a lot of work to insert something that is so useful.

Instead of getting it from the character map each time, if you know you’ll be using it often, paste it to a designated “textual marks” document. Have that document outside the draft, at the very top of the binder for quick find, or add it to project bookmarks. Then copy paste the special character from there instead.
That, or learn its Unicode code by heart.
Alt + 2011 (Might be conflicting with shortcuts tho, it doesn’t work for me…)

For uncommon symbols that you intend to be working with more frequently, they can be added to the Substitutions list, either at the system level for Mac, or into Scrivener itself for PC:

  • Mac:
    1. Open Preferences and go to the Corrections tab. If necessary, enable Symbol and text substitution in the Auto-Correction section.
    2. Click the System Text Preferences... button toward the bottom, to open System Preferences.
  • Win:
    1. Open File â–¸ Options... to the Corrections tab, and click Enable additional substitutions if necessary.
    2. Click the Edit Substitutions... button.

For both platforms:

  1. Click the + button at the bottom of the table on the left.
  2. Add a sequence you won’t type normally that will be substituted for the symbol, like: \-
  3. Insert the symbol into the field to the right.

Return to the editor and test the result.
