Hello all. I am a newb here. I began by tutoring myself on the novel template and realized that was a great way to flesh out the book. When I opened Novel With Parts I felt more at ease…EXCEPT…nowhere does it say that deleting the folder PARTS will affect the compilation of the end product: the novel/paperback. The confusing part is that it states one should not name the folder named ‘chapter’ as Chapter One, Two, et al. So I have a folder named:
PART (I assume that means BEGINNING)
Chapter (I assume that means chapter one- can’t be named that)
Scene (Various scenes in the chapter)
Then again…
PART (I assume that means MIDDLE)
Chapter (I assume that means chapter whichever I have worked up to- can’t be named that)
Scene (Various scenes in the chapter)
Then again…
PART (I assume that means ENDING)
Chapter (I assume that means chapter whichever I have worked up to- can’t be named thaT)
Scene (Various scenes in the chapter)
Is that right? Or does someone have a simpler explanation?
Bless you for any help.
You can name any folder or file anything you want. It’s best practice (in my opinion and some others) not to name them “chapter one”, etc., but it’s not a Scrivener restriction. An alternative is automating chapter numbering in Compile and using descriptive chapter names as in the example at the link:
headings
No. The parts don’t mean “beginning”, “middle”, or “end”.
Some authors may write a book with sixty chapters divided into three parts. Each Part folder would contain chapter folders which in turn may contain scene files. None of these words — part, chapter, scene, etc. — are Scrivener terms. They’re English words for pieces of a book that Scrivener allows you to represent in the Binder as folders and files.
Of course it can.
True. The Binder Layers (however named) are connected to Layout and Formatting “By Binder Structure”. When you break the structure, Compilation is broken as well.
Either bring back the original structure of Parts, Chapters, and Scenes or adjust the connection between Binder Layers and Section Types in [Project > Project Settings > Section Layout > By structure].
For a Newb, I’d choose the first.
This is only because the word “Chapter” is already generated during Compile, followed by a Automatic Number “One”.
Name your Parts by their Title: “The fellowship of the Ring”, your Chapters: “A long-expected party” and your Scenes: “About Bilbo Baggins”. Titles may or may not appear in the End product, depending on Compilation Settings. As @drmajorbob says: Name your chapters what you want.
The other method to get to a correcte compiled End product is by Binder Item > Section Type > Section Layout > Compile, which is a more complicated, but more controlled path to your End product.
Good luck with your Novel!

Note this is a feature of some project templates, @Bendito, not a feature of the Scrivener app. Everything in a project can be changed if you don’t like it or have a need the template wasn’t designed for.
