Now it's 2025: Is there any information about the new app?

I remember the blog said that the new app would be released by the end of 2024

Anything new will be in the Announcement section or on the blog. Or splashed across the top of the screen like with any update.

L&L typically won’t say much until they announce it. Realistically, I’m guessing mid '25. Their stated aim is to have all three platform versions released together.

ā€œBefore the end of 2024, we’ll be launching a new writing app on macOS, Windows and iOS. We’re now putting the call out for beta testers. Read on if you’d like to learn more and participate.ā€
any idea?

Above still applies. Some hermit in a cave on a mountain may be able to give a better idea of timing of the release.

This also still applies.

I wouldn’t hold back on any plans that you might have, just to wait for this to be released. Use whatever software you are using now. It will be announced when they feel it’s ready to be released. I’m guessing that they need to get the software ready, and work out the marketing for the product and other complicated logistics / release windows. I would not be surprised if this comes out at the end of the year or in 2026, but I’d love to be wrong because it looks very interesting.

I’m not trying to be obnoxious, but any news about the new ā€œsimplerā€ application?

No rush; I’d rather have it solid than too soon.

Thanks!

There will be news when it’s released. L&L typically don’t discuss new releases until they go live.

I wouldn’t go holding your breath.

Unfortunately, Liquid Glass and macOS/iOS 26 added six months of development time (and also made me want to stop coding for macOS/iOS and retire). The OS 26 versions now need to go into testing for a while.

…hopefully a break over the Christmas period has sufficed? Thank you for your great efforts @KB .

It did until I came back and had to spend more time working around Apple bugs! But I’m (mostly) joking - no plans to retire just yet! Fingers crossed Apple gets back to its old self with OS 27 and 28. (And thanks for the supportive words.)

I’m starting to think it might be time to put an engineer back in the driving seat at Apple. Or at least someone who can focus on both developers and the stock price.

You do realize there were also monumental stuff ups when ā€˜Lord Jobs’ was in the driving seat? Under his leadership there were multiple OS/App releases full of bugs. On apps alone, Maps, iWork 9, FCPx come to mind.

As an ex employee, the current incumbent is IMHO a far better person to work for. The almighty Jobs was often an a..hole.

Not saying Cook is perfect, but if you look at the direction when Jobs was in charge, his sometimes irrational preferences (against iPad mini etc) held back Apple’s growth, and when Ive had free reign it was often form over function. Have you seen the images of the Ferrari EV interior designed by him? :face_vomiting:

Apple’s hardware trajectory is (IMHO) exciting, and while I think OS 26 has more than usual bugs, it is still a solid OS and I have no day to day issues with it.

Are you kidding? It’s a masterwork of reinterpretation of the classical Ferrari (in particular, Testarossa), with a maniacal attention to the details, each one inspired to a historical equivalent. Clean, elegant, with abundance of physical controls over digital ones. I’m in love, and even if I wasn’t I could at least recognize the function blended with the form.

The famous Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field appears to persist even after his death.

I think it looks like a Playstation 2 controller. And a cheap plasticky one at that.

It’s all aluminium. Maybe with very small gaskets made of plastic.
