Old files lost

Hello,
I had used an old, obviously unregistered version of scrivener until it expired (today). I didn’t have (or find) the option to upgrade within this old version and downloaded the new one, opened it as requested and then clicked ‘replace’ (ersetzen) the older version when I was asked to do so. I thought my old files would be saved somehow and reappear. But I could not acess them through the new version though. I have timemachine running and thought I could finde them in an automated backup:
~/Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Backups

But in the timemachine the trick with seeing the Library doesn’t work. But these old files should not have been deleted with the old version, shouldn’t they? How can I retrieve them?

Thanks for helping a tired customer

Your projects are stored separately from the Scrivener application, and should still be right where you left them. By default, this will be somewhere in the Documents folder, but you could have chosen any location when you created the project.

I’d recommend using Finder to search for either .scriv files or for some text that you would expect to see in the missing material. If you like to use external drives or thumb drives, be sure to search there, too.

Thanks! I finally found the files (even those I didn’t remember existed) and learned how to import them !

Note that this command does not work with the Apple App Store version of Scrivener, due to the sandboxing imposed by the App Store.

Hello all,

I am having a similar problem, but unfortunately cannot locate my backup files. I hope someone here might be able to help.

This started this morning when I tried to open my project. Every time I open the file the program crashes. I’ve tried opening it directly, opening Scrivener first and then going to the file, everything. And every time I open this file, Scrivener crashes.

It is clearly a problem with the file because other Scrivener files open.

I see that it backed up in Library/Scrivener/Applications but I cannot find these files. I’ve tried everything with finder all possible names, all Scrivener files, everything and they don’t appear.

I opened another project, and went to the “Back up to” option under “File” and see that all of the files are being backed up to this location. However when I type the exact name of the backup file I need into Finder, they do not appear.

I also noticed that they are all being saved as .zip files.

This is a very important project to me that represents months of preparation for written exams. The idea of losing it is terrifying, as the exam is very soon.

I am new to this forum and cannot even figure out how to post a new post so am posting here as it is somewhat related and sincerely hope that someone might be able to help me.

Thank you.

Laura

Instead of searching in Finder for these files, have you tried to navigate to that backup folder to see for yourself if the files are actually there?
