Not sure whether I sould buy the thing. Accuracy is only 90%, and heard the software doesn’t play nice with TextExpander.

Found a forum discussion about the software here: [url]https://forum.literatureandlatte.com/t/speech-recognition-and-scrivener/8896/1]

As one who says ten words a week out loud, this never really cough worked for me glass of water. Plus, I feel weird talking to a computer unless I’m ordering tea.

Cadence, thank you for advicing. I just bought it, and am trying to download the 1.22 GB file (it should happen in just a bit less than 12 hours).

The funny part is that I will not use it  I don’t use Snow Leopard yet, and the software is - at least it was the last time I looked around - only in English, a language I don’t master enough to write tales with it.

But sooner or later they will align it to the Windows version, that I use very often despite the hassle of having to run it under Windows. And I will have a licence to - hopefully - be able to ask a reduced price.

Yay! Glad to have helped at least one soul in this vaaaast universe!

Darn it. I’m sorry to report that it’s now only 25% off. So whoever acted fast and got it for the 30 bucks, good for him!

Thanks Cadence,

I was lucky (?) enough to get in early so I got the $30 deal. I used to use the Dragon product for Windows 10 years back and it wasnt too bad - but not good enough to use as main input mode - so Im hoping there’s been improvement since then. My mild RSI has definitely not improved in that time, so all the more reason to give it a whirl.

You’re welcome, geoffh  I know RSI (aka CTD) can be a b*tch, so I hope dictating to your Mac instead of using the mouse would help.

I wonder if Apple’s Magic Trackpad might help alleviate Repetitive Strain Injuries. I stumbled across a review by Ian Osborne at TechRadar, Long-term test: a month with the Magic Trackpad – scroll down to “Day 12”: he’s talking a bit about RSI, Magic Trackpad and Wacom’s Bamboo.

Not read the review yet, but I bought a Magic Trackpad three weeks ago because of mild RSI. So far, it’s been fine. I’m a heavy user of the computer and while the improvement has been noticeable, it’s not been a ‘magical’ cure (sorry…). Nonetheless, I completed NaNoWri using the magic trackpad, and I believe I would have felt more discomfort if I’d still been using the mouse.

NB I hate using the mouse / trackpad anyway, so I mimimise its use wherever I can - so I may not be a typical user.

I did find it useful to use it upside down (ie slope facing away from me, not silver-side down…). You need to use the terminal to make this change and at the moment I can’t remember how I did that - I found the hack on Google, though, and could probably find the link again if you needed it.

Regards

David

Hi David, thanks for the input. I’ve been curious to know if computer users suffering from RSI might benefit from using Magic Trackpad. So, it helps in part, but it’s no silver bullet. Figures.
I guess a more comprehensive solution might be combining Magic Trackpad with work-rest schedules (which, oddly, reminds me of the productivity tools the Pomodoro Technique and Vitamin-R).

I understand there’s an app for iPhone that works really well for taking dictation. Immediate conversion to text. Don’t have an iPhone, this is the only reason at the moment I would want one, but attractive as it sounds, it’s not enough.

Adding to this thread, I must say that Nuance just released Service Pack 1 for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 for Windows (service packs are major updates). Recognition, at least in Italian, is even improved, and is next to perfect (at least with my standard Italian prononciation). Damn there is nothing similar, at the same price, on the Mac. Great thing that something like VirtualBox and network developer licences for Windows exist…

Scheduled rest breaks have been the number one anti-RSI solution for me. Going from a mouse to a trackball and now a trackpad helped. Getting a good chair helped. But breaks are still essential.

I use a little application called AntiRSI. (tech.inhelsinki.nl/antirsi/) Highly recommended.

Katherine

Katherine, thank you for the link. I downloaded AntiRSI and have been using it for the last couple of hours. I love its simplicity. Can’t believe it’s free. Great tip, thanks!

I found there were other similar apps: Dejal’s Time Out (free) and MacBreakZ (pay).

But I ended up choosing AntiRSI because of its wonderful simplicity.

I understand the Mac version has some catch-up to do, then. But I trust Nuance to further fine tune Dragon Dictate, fast. Funny thing is, after I posted the discount, I waited too long and missed the 75% discount. Typical of me. :unamused: Guess I’ll end up paying the full price, LOL.
