I'm truly inexperienced in shuffling projects into new device from dropbox. OH!! I seem to have all the backup zip files downloads from Dropbox in my windows laptop but I got no idea how to open my old project in said laptop. I am ready to spend as much time as possible learning all of Scrivener but right now I think I'm just driving blind and missing some little detail of opening my scrivener project---THANKS
If itās a ZIP file, itās easy:
- Make sure the file has been synced to the local device.
- Uncompress the file.
- Open as normal.
If itās a project, as opposed to a .zip backup mentioned by @kewms, set up the Dropbox app on the new computer and sync to your account. Just go into your Dropbox account via the dropbox app on your computer before you open any projects on the new computer and make certain the Dropbox folder and any new files are set to Available Offline per the screenshot. (Mac but Win should be similar). Scrivener projects are not designed to be opened direct from cloud services. You can set it up so that only specific folders such as Scrivener projects folder are available offline, but I do this for everything so nothing gets missed in a āseniors momentā.
Download 7-zip. Itās free.
Thanks kewms!! ha ha ha! my Scrivener mental health declined even further but just in the past few weeks I overcame what I had once thought was recreational use, even minor use, I thought, of pain pills and muscle relaxers but I learned the God fearing way that the self medicating was the cause of a seriously depressing ADHD! Now clean by the grace of God my MOJO is coming back! Everyday is like a miracle now.
Iām positive my cherished project is synced to my new device via Dropbox but I have no idea how to uncompress the files! I almost canāt believe I wrote over 30 chapters and 80k words but sure those are the simplest functions of SCRIVENER
Do you have any ideas how I could find a Scrivener tutor like here in Atlanta that I could pay for one hour to learn what are undoubtedly very simple tasks in this phenomenal Scrivener program? maybe an online hands on one on one tutor? In the meantime, Iām not giving up on this L&L routeāThank you so much and Happy New Year and it is my sincerest desire that everything is going your way
Sorry just now getting my head straight again RuffPub! I finally conquered what I thought was recreational, even minor use, I thought, of pain pills and muscle relaxers. It was the cause of a seriously depressing ADHD and with the help of God I am healing somewhat slowly but in a genuinely marvelous way!
I canāt even access the PREFERENCES window in my Dropbox account and this āmayā be the solution to this major dilemma! Iām 66 and yet I was seriously trapped in Senior Moments but it was only the affliction described above and now I have the opportunity to develop a true writing passion. Itās crazy fantastic and miraculous that when one gets on a new journey of beginning to learn how to love oneās self the whole world opens up and they begin learning how to love the whole world and everyone and everything in the world!
Another reply from my original post mentioned uncompressing using 7-zip but I donāt need it do I?? If I make it available offline (preference/sync) that solves the unzippable problem? thank you so much-Warren
Youāre the same person I finally replied to Today!!! and now how does this 7-zip work? You download the APP and you just open it while youāre in your files? Yes Iām still a giant learning curve ZOMBIE!!! thank you TREMENDOUSLY amigo!
The zip-files is a compressed file, containing all the files of your Project. Itās like folding a few pages of a letter and sticking them in an envelope.
Install 7-zip, navigate to the zip-file, and right-click it. Choose 7-zip > Extract here to open the envelope and unfold your Project folder. Open the SCRV-folder and double-click the SCRVX-file to launch Scrivener with your Project.
HTH
Just to clarify ā¦ on my Windows 10 Pro (running in VMWare on an iMac), I notice i can āunzipā a Zip file using Windows File Explorer. I donāt find need to install third-party apps. Is it it just me? Or is there special functionality that 7-zip helps with?
Yes, you are right. Itās just that this feature is so invisible that users donāt realize there are watching the contents of a compressed set of files and folders, and try to open compressed folders, and are stymied they get an error message. A free third-party tool makes that clear.
