Hi there,
For some reason when I try to compile it doesn’t show page brakes between chapters. I have tried creating a new template with code I found on this website but that didn’t work either. I am a bit stuck can anyone help?
Thank you

Hi ahpwrites, and welcome to the forum.
Your message was posted in the macOS area, but your subject line references the iPad.
To better guide you, are you working with the Scrivener for iOS app on the iPad? Or, are you using Scrivener 3 on a Mac computer?
Hi Ruth I’m using the iPad version. Sorry If I put the wrong one in the heading I wasn’t sure which one to put.
Thank you for that clarification. I appreciate it.
I’ll start by noting that the Scrivener for iOS app has a Tutorial document on its main screen under the “Help” heading. That Tutorial includes some tips on compiling, so I suggest you start with it.
Also, we have a Knowledge Base article on customizing the iOS compile settings that you may find helpful for an overview.
One factor that will affect the compile settings in the iOS version is how you have your project set up in the project’s interface.
For example, let’s say I have a project that is set up so each of my chapters is its own separate document but not a folder. It would look like this:
If I want Scrivener to start each of those documents in the output file as a separate chapter with a page break, I’ll need to customize the Output Appearance I’m using.
I’ll start by selecting my output file type and the appearance on this panel:
That Manuscript (Times) option is built on the assumption that I’ll have folders in my binder for each chapter and documents within each folder for scenes.
Since that is not how I’ve structured my project, I need to duplicate this format and then customize it to get the results I need.
When I tap on the Manuscript (Times) option, I see a panel where I can tap an Edit button. That brings up circles next to each appearance’s name. I’ll tap the circle before the appearance I need to customize and then tap the duplication button along the lower edge of the panel.
That now gives me these options, allowing me to choose if this customized appearance is for only this project, saved for all projects on my iPad, or saved to Dropbox:
Once I’ve made that choice, I’ll see the Appearance Editor screen and its YAML:
I’ll scroll through here until I find the settings that govern the page break behavior.
Since my project doesn’t use folders, I need to edit the YAML to match that screenshot by removing the hashmarks.
If I needed additional guidance on how to word these instructions to Scrivener, that circled question mark button near the top of this screen has additional instructions:
And if I tap it, I’ll see this screen that explains more about the options I can use:
This panel has a lot of different settings and options. I’ve found that locating the wording I need and copying it to paste it into the instructions works better for me.
I also tend to take screenshots of the wording I need, just so I can have it to review if I lose my place in that list.
This is a lot to unpack, I know. If you’ve been trying to get these settings customized and still aren’t getting exactly the results you need, you can open a support ticket here.
One of the tech-support team would be happy to help if needed.
This breakdown is absolutely fantastic. Thank you so much. You have shown with the example exactly how my project is set up. I will try this and let you know how I get on thanks again!
