Paragraph and Line Break

Hello everyone!
I’ve noticed that Scrivener only supports paragraph breaks with ¶.
Is this a bug?
How do I create a line break with ↵?
Can or should I create books with only paragraph breaks and without line breaks?
Sorry for the English, but I’m German and used Google Translate!

Leon

The macOS line break keyboard combination is “control-enter”. For those unaware, can use Menu: View → Text Editing → Show Invisibles to see those characters.

Are you sure that’s still the default? is now (15.x) the “context menu hotkey”. And does the line break for me (either that’s the new default or I changed it to that :face_with_raised_eyebrow:).

Most likely “stick with the paragraphs” is the best answer for now.

Erm, while @November_Sierra has got it right re key combos under MacOS 15.5, and, in my opinion, also about not using line breaks except in special circumstances… from his profile it seems that @cvst1lleo is actually a Windows user, even though he has posted in the Mac forum.

I don’t know the keystroke combination for line break on Windows.

I’m on macOS 13.7.6 with UK keyboard and for sure control-enter works to make a new line. Pity future versions apparently changed. Didn’t know that.

Okay, so it’s:

macOS < 15 =

macOS 15+ =

Windows = ? (ALT + ENTER)

I’ve owned a MAC since January!!! And I bought it ONLY BECAUSE of Scrivener!!!
No joke!

⌥⌘↵ is the solution!

Now I can revise!!! a 600-page novel because I’ve been using the Windows combination until now and didn’t have the control character view enabled.

This is my first book, and it’s been such a difficult birth

Thank you so much for your amazing help!

I would say you should use paragraph breaks unless you have a specific reason to prefer line breaks. Paragraph breaks are (at least in English) more commonly used by a pretty wide margin.

Can I ask, why do you want to use line breaks rather than paragraphs? Is it that you don’t want the extra spacing between paragraphs? If so that can be adjusted easily.

The thing is while using line breaks might look fine in the editor, it is potentially going to cause unwanted formatting when you compile, especially if you compile to a different font or size.

If you are planning to publish to ePub, remember the reader controls font, font size, justification, line height, etc., and line breaks will cause problems with layout all the way through the ePub.

Thank you for your valuable and helpful tips!

I’ve just started reading up on the topic on Wikipedia based on your opinions.
I have a few Facebook discussions in the book that look very strange with the indentation, which is why I need a line break.

User_1: Hello!
User_2: Hello!

Oh man, I’m really happy! Great software, great forum.
I’ve never experienced anything like this with competitors! Especially not in Germany
Thanks again!

Another alternative would be to use a paragraph Style with no indent for those sections.
