I’m having the same problem on Scrivener 3.2.2 (most recent updated) OS 11.5.1 (most recent update) when I make a clipping from a document in Preview. Can someone please help?
This does not seem to be a problem when making a clipping from my browser. I queried the Help sections in my OS, Preview, the internet, etc. for information about a ‘Pasteboard’ and I’m not finding anything.
PDF open in Preview - Mac Services- > Create Clipping - gives an error message “Clipping Creation Failed: String could not be created from pasteboard.” - I’ve tried a few different services (append, clipping etc) and get similar error message.
As I recall, Apple broke text services from some of their programs years ago. Crazy they haven’t fixed that yet.
It’s always a good idea to test around the problem you are seeing. If you try using a text service from Preview to TextEdit for example, you should find a similar failure. Meanwhile, you’ll probably find that clipping from TextEdit to Scrivener works fine.
You may also find that switching away from Apple software that has this bug is the right move (particularly if you consider services essential). Skim, for example, is a better PDF reader than Preview in my opinion, and it works, at least in macOS 10.15. But even if Skim doesn’t work, I’d bet something else does.
