I have been using scrivener for years and just updated to 3. I was curious about pcloud. Now I’ve used it as an archive backup for a few years now. But I was laying in bed and in that twilight zone between wake and sleep I wondered about using it for the actual scrivener files. It promy woke me up so I must know. Has anyone ever tried it? Or will it become a great Xade Adenture?
I’ve not used, but I do recall discussions about it here previously. Search for “pcloud” for past posts. Might be of use to you as a starting.
Any cloud service can work on desktop/laptop machines with Scrivener (given enough attention to details), but iOS Scrivener knows Dropbox only.
I use pCloud to sync Scrivener projects, but I also use Dropbox (free). I accumulated 15 GB to my free Dropbox account which is more than sufficient for my Scrivener needs. Here is what I did/do:
- Back Everything Up Locally and then back that folder up to pCloud using the pCloud “Backup” functionality. This has never caused any problem and ensures both a local backup and a remote archive exists for my projects.
- Create a Scrivener folder in the app folder of Dropbox and use that as the default project location
- Create a Scrivener Folder on pCloud
- Use pCloud Sync functionality to create a sync between the Dropbox Scrivener Folder and the pCloud Scrivener Folder
- This saves to Dropbox, syncs to pCloud and becomes available to me on machines on which I have pCloud (I am a lifetime subscriber so that would be everywhere). I do not have Dropbox access on all of my machines due to Dropbox’s cap on the # of devices on a free account
I have found that Dropbox works far better than anything else with iOS devices but I can easily access Scrivener projects from the pCloud folder everywhere else
I have never had a problem with this and have been able to leverage the benefits of Dropbox on iOS but use pCloud as my primary point of contact
Final recommendation if you use pCloud and have sufficient local space set the cache to something larger than the minimum (5024 MB is the minimum). This can be done in pCloud settings.
I am not an expert, but I have read carefully Scrivener’s cautionary guidance regarding Cloud syncing. This does not seem to run afoul of any of their proscriptions. I have not had problems with this set-up. I am guessing that results may vary so back up everything before testing it for yourself.
