I’ve looked in the manual and searched the forum - sorry if I am missing this. I can edit and see line numbers but I also want those line numbers to appear in the printed version. Can this be done?

No, this is just an internal tool for your own reference. Best thing to do is open up the file in a word processor that supports line numbering and print from there.
any chance that this could become an option under “compile”?
