Problem entering footnotes

I’m a Scrivener newbie working on my first manuscript, and cannot get footnotes to insert into the text. I highlight the text insert location and type the footnote, but it will not insert into the manuscript despite me following the tutorial instructions.

I’m not sure I understand. When you type the footnote, where does it go? Expected behavior would be for it to appear in the Inspector (or inline, for inline notes), and stay there until you Compile the manuscript. (At which point you have a number of choices for footnote/endnote placement.)

I think you explained it. I highlighted a word in the text and typed the footnote in Inspector. I was thinking that the next step would insert the footnote into my draft page. But if I understand you correctly, the footnote actually remains in Inspector and only inserts into the manuscript when I Compile.

Correct.

It would be more accurate to say that a “complete manuscript” only exists as the output of the Compile command. The whole point of Scrivener’s design is that you can manage the actual writing in whatever way makes sense to you. You don’t have to make “design” decisions until the end.
