Problems adding table

Hi,

I am trying to insert a table but I cannot add or remove columns. Nothing happens when I either try to enter a different number or use the up- and down-arrows. Please advice!

I am using version 3.3.6 on a Mac with Sonoma 14.1.2.

Thank you!
Mimmi

Hello,

I’ve just tried it with 3.3.6 on M2Pro Mini with 14.1.2. It depends where the focus is. The focus has to be on the table, not on the Table dialog. With my cursor in the table itself and the Table panel with a greyed out title, clicking the up-and-down arrows works to add or remove columns or rows.

What doesn’t seem to work properly is the cell border setting. I’ll make a test case and report that as a bug. I think a workaround for the moment would be to make your table without borders and then set them cell-by-cell when you’ve finished it, or even better, sort out the borders etc. in your wordprocessor post-compile.

Hi Mimmi,

With further experimentation (in all my 16 years of using Scrivener, I have never needed tables) I have discovered that it does work to set the borders cell-by-cell, the problem is that the colour-swatch has the same colour grey as the ā€˜no border’ marking for those cells; you need to have the colour palate open and click to set each one to the same black as the original borders.

Also, with your cursor in a cell, right-click gives you a dropdown with ā€œTableā€ at the top which gives access to a sub-menu allowing you to do various things. Adding rows or columns using the menu-options there does create cells which inherit the border settings of the original table.

So there you go; I hope that helps.

Thank you very much!

I’m sorry to say though that it does not help. When I choose insert table I get a 1x1-table as wide as the page. Then I cannot change the number of rows or columns, no matter how I try to do it. If I have the cursor in the table, the up and down arrows will only move the cursor in the document. It is as if the dialog is locked/freeze in relation to the actual table.

Thank you also for the heads up about the borders. I have a slight memory of there being some issues, but that is the least of my concerns at the moment

Best,
Mimmi

Unfortunately, I’m not a moderator and don’t have the ability to let you post images. It would be so much easier if I/we could see what you’re seeing. For me, choosing Insert Table gives me a table of three columns and two rows, so I have no idea why you’re only getting a 1 x 1 table, or why you’re not able to add rows or columns.

Until a moderator comes along to upgrade your status so you can post screenshots, can I suggest you try opening a new vanilla blank project and try inserting a table in that and adding rows and columns there. If it works there, it would suggest that there is some problem with the project you’re working in. Can you do that and let us know the result?

Good morning!

I restarted the computer and now it seems to work fine.

Thanks for your support and happy holidays!

Good evening (UK time!). Sorry to be a late responding (packing up and on the road to London for Xmas!).

I’m glad you’ve got it sorted. How often do you shut down your computer? If you leave it running for days on end it can build up a lot of cruft in the system, bits of code that get left behind in memory, which can do strange things like that.

Basically, I shut down every evening, and also run Onyx Maintenance regularly to keep things running smoothly.

Best wishes for the festive season.

Thanks Mark!

I’d rather not talk about how often I restart my computer, but I will keep your wise words in mind for the future…

I hope the holidays were good for you and that you have a good start of the new year!
