Problems with old projects in scrivener 3

I have been using scrivener since 2019, and just recently upgraded to 3. I opened an old project in 3, it did the update, and I can see the text. However, scrivener 3 isn’t functioning properly in the old project. If I start a new project, all icons and options are there, ready to use, but if I try to work on my current (old version) project, much is missing or non-functional. I don’t want to copy and paste 3 entire books into new projects. I must be doing something wrong. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? I can’t find any tutorials or videos on this anywhere. Thank you.

Start with the Upgrade Guide to see if that solves your problems.

Just opening the old project in Scrivener 3 should be all you need to do. There’s no trick or special setting involved.

Are those old projects really stored locally, on your computer? Or is there some cloud service or Windows feature involved that “helpfully” stores half of the project in a cloud service so Scrivener can’t find it when it’s converting the project files?

sorry, meant to respond to a different post, ignore that

I have read the Upgrade guide. It doesn’t say anything about this being a problem. At least not that I can find.

stored locally, to the best of my knowledge. I guess this problem is some kind of … glitch. Damn. I really don’t want to copy and paste everything over. And now that I have updated to scriv. 3, I cannot open the book in scriv. 1. So essentially, I can’t work on it anymore.

What is not working properly? What are the symptoms?

As I said, I have only just upgraded, so I haven’t yet fully explored. And I was never very proficient at working my way around scrivener 1, either. However, some of what I have noticed is that there are no icons on bottom right corner for the corkboard. Under view on top left, there seem to be a number of things that do not work or show as they do in instructional videos. Let’s start with the icons for the corkboard on the bottom right corner. They’re not there.
I have begun to copy and paste one of my newer and shorter projects into scriv 3 and in this “new project” the icons are there. it is just the old projects updated that have this issue, and I can’t find anything in the ugrade guide to address it, or anything in youtube videos or articles to explain it.
I can’t be the only one who experienced this. Someone must know what’s going on and how to fix it.

I don’t recall similar reports of the upgrade not working; but, I’ll defer to people who know more of the history and background.

You are reporting issue with Corkboard. Do other views work? Using none of the special views but just navigating via the Binder? Are the new project files stored in a sync folder, e.g. Dropbox? Perhaps some anti-Virus software is interfering with Scrivener?

Some screen shots of what you are seeing will help others give advice.

For strange user interface issues that seem to be specific to one project, the first thing to try is resetting the project’s view settings. You’ll find the menu command in “File”, as “Close Project and Clear Interface Settings”.

When you reload it, everything will be reset to default, and nothing will be loaded in the main editor. So you will need to expand your binder and click on a folder to see the corkboard again, and then you can verify whether the buttons are now visible.

I’ve never heard of anyone encountering an issue like this either, so if there is something more to it than that, at the very least, it is far more efficient and complete to use the File ▸ Import ▸ Scrivener Project... command from the new project, selecting the old project, than to spend hours manually copying and pasting. But even if that one-second solution, I would only go down that route as a last resort. There are very few problems in my experience that would require starting over from scratch.

Scrivener 3 should actually have created a copy of your project and left the original untouched. In other words, you should have your book twice now, in the old and the new format.

And you can export your v3 book back to v1…
