I’d appreciate it if someone could help me with the sync issue.
(1) My setting:
Device 1: desktop
Device 2: Laptop
Cloud: Dropbox
(2) Issue:
I’m working on Project A on the two devices above, using Dropbox for the external folder sync feature. Regardless of which device I work with, the files in the project sync perfectly fine and remain up-to-date on both devices after syncing the project upon closing it. However, I’ve noticed that this is only the case when the folder and file structure in the project remain the same. If I create a new folder or a new file (or delete them) in the project on Device 1, these changes are not synced and updated in the project opened on Device 2.
The odd thing is that the files, as long as it exists in the project on both Devices, sync perfectly fine. It’s just the new folders and files or deleted ones that are not synced.
Could somebody please help me out with this?
I’ve talked to other users and confirmed that this should not be the case, and any changes to the file or folder structures should be synced immediately on all devices as long as they are “synced to the same external folder on dropbox”.
I tried numerous ways and found out that using external sync feature wasnt the right approach like you said. So I deleted all files and filders in the dropbixox to start cleanslate and tried the following steps:
Relocated the local Scrivener project folder to a new folder in the dropbox path.
Opened it on a laptop: works fine.
Opened it in the desktop: wont open, with an error msg that says… [ Unable to open a project in the scrivener installation folder. Close Scrivener….] Then the desktop opens the old out of sync project version.
From what I gather, you are supposed to be using only one and identical scrivener project in the dropbox path to ensure sync btw machines. Hwver I cannot open it on the desktop so I must have done sth incorewctly. Could you help me?
This not true (if I understand what you are saying).
I put all (about a dozen now) of my Scrivener projects in one Dropbox folder, e.g.
Dropbox/Apps/Scrivener/
Hard to tell from here, but I suspect that there are remnants of the old versions of the project still in Dropbox and it’s syncing. Turn off Dropbox on all devices to stop any background syncing. Go to Dropbox’s web site with a browser and look and rename and/or delete the old stuff if confident. Also look again at Desktop Dropbox folders to ensure all gone. Check on laptop that your current version of the Scrivener project in place. Turn on Dropbox again. Wait for Dropbox to complete the sync. Go to desktop. Turn on Dropbox again, and wait for a complete synch. Look to see if the correct version of Scrivener is in the correct/expected file folder.
Finally, open the Scrivener project on all devices NOT using “recent projects” (which may point to the old version), and instead “Open an Existing File" button and navigate specifically to the current Scrivener project inside the Dropbox folder.
