RC19 : Mystery appearance of a smiley when copy and pasting

I prepare questions in one chapter and present the answer in another. This involves copying the question text and pasting it into a Results chapter prior to developing the answer. I use Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste (to preserve format and styles).

Today, on pasting, a mysterious small black smiley appeared in the paste. I have seen this on very odd occasions in the past and have simply deleted the smiley. I have done these copy/paste actions hundreds of times without smileys appearing and they do delete easily. I have no idea what caused it to appear and I cannot repeat it with copy/paste of the same text. Maybe this is a random bug or I have inadvertently done something strange.

Original which I copy with Ctrl+C

Example 11.22: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Vestibulum

Result when I paste with Ctrl+V
Example 11.22☻: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Vestibulum

Can anyone offer an explanation?

Ghost in your machine? LOL

Hi ! There is no reason for a software to introduce random characters inside a writting field. But it seems to happened to you ! I might have a clue :

Maybe you hit Alt and 1 keys while hitting Ctrl V to paste your words. Give it a try and you’ll see

@Loniloni – thanks for that idea. I wasn’t aware of those shortcuts but the black smiley certainly looks like what I got. And today I had a small black heart appear - Alt + 3 in your table ()

I’ve tried experimenting and I can certainly produce those icons but only when using the number pad on the right hand end of the keyboard - not the numbers on the top row.

After copying and pasting, I do edit the pasted text to increment the example number so I do use the numbers but it would be difficult to hold the Alt key down accidently. But it does look connected somehow.

Something to bear in mind.
