remove auto indent

Hello. I can’t find instructions for how to remove the first-line auto-indenting “feature” - specifically, in ios (ipad). Thanks for any suggestions.

When you are in the Editor view and have clicked so the cursor is blinking in the text, tap the brush in the top right corner and choose Indents.

Wow. That was embarrassingly easy. I think I got distracted looking for a way to shut off auto indent by default, for every file. But this is so simple, I hardly mind doing this at the start of each new document. Thanks for you help, lunk.

You don’t even have to do it every time. Once you’ve set the paragraph up to your liking go to the first tab of the formatting palette and click on the Formatting Options button. There you’ll find an option to save your changes as the new default for new documents.

HTH.

Yes, thank you, brookter. TH’d a lot. I really appreciate the tip.

How do we do this on the desktop app? I’d like some Projects to default to no auto indent. I seem to be flailing around, manually (awkwardly) pressing col-opt-command-arrow to strip these things out.

You can either use the Ruler or, for more precision, the Tabs and Indents Tool.
See section 15.4.1, The Ruler, of the manual.

Edit to add: also see Sections B.3.2 and C.5 for setting global and project format defaults.

On the Mac, individual projects can have their own default formatting. Use the Project ▸ Project Settings… menu command, and click on the Formatting tab. Enable Use different default formatting for new documents in this project, and set things up in the usual manner.

Note this has bearing on how the iOS version works.

Amber - thank you. Does it just save the Preferences–>Formatting set up for that document, or also things I’ve moved around on the ruler or elsewhere?

Just as with the main application formatting defaults, they only impact newly created documents within that project. So the method to bring older documents (including the one you may be looking at when you change your settings) up to the new formatting standard is the same as well: the Documents ▸ Convert ▸ Text to Default Formatting… command, which can be used on one or many selected binder items. That command first checks to see if your project has unique formatting, and if so it uses that, otherwise it uses the global default.
