Hello - I recently changed PhD programs and need to restructure my 325+ page dissertation according to the guiltiness of the new program. Can Scrivener help if I upload the current version and provide details about the new structure? Can any other AI tool help?
Hi RJSPILLERE and welcome to the forum.
Do you already use Scrivener for your project? Or, would this rewrite of your dissertation be your first work with Scrivener?
I ask because Scrivener is not an AI tool, nor does it have AI tools built into it.
It’s an outliner based writing program that can help writers with organizing their research and with writing and revising drafts of the project.
The heavy lifting of making sure that your formatting and citations meet the department’s guidelines are still on you.
However, Scrivener’s compile tools can make managing that easier. If you’re familiar with Markdown, Pandoc, and/or Quarto, you can do a lot more with automating your formatting.
If you’re coming to Scrivener from Microsoft Word, you’ll find that Scrivener is not necessarily WYSIWYG. You may still need to finalize your formatting in Word or LibreOffice, depending on departmental submissions requirements. That step might also be needed to convert the temporary citations Scrivener creates as placeholders with the full citations needed in your footnotes/endnotes.
If you’re not already using Scrivener, I recommend taking advantage of our 30-day trial period to test out a fully functional copy of Scrivener on your computer.
And, to be clear, that trial period is for 30 non-consecutive days. That is, if you use Scrivener every day, the trial lasts 30 days; if you use it only two days a week, it lasts fifteen weeks.
You can download the trial here.
Starting with its Tutorial to learn the terminology and how a project can be structured could help you decide if this approach will work for you.
