RIP eReader.com and fictionwise.com

These were the pioneers of the e-book era, and Fictionwise in particular strove to make e-books better emulate the real world, with un-crippled formats and library lending systems. but they were bought out some time ago by Barnes & Noble, and by 2013 their services will no longer be available. If you have libraries of e-books purchased from them, don’t forget to bulk download and back them all up. There is supposedly a migration to Nook path in place, but I’m not sure how or if that will work with the Fictionwise indie stuff.

Bleh.

Don’t get me wrong, I like my Kindle, but I’d like there to be other options for ebooks that aren’t bigboxes. Tor’s a step in the right direction, although I don’t think they’re selling over here yet?
